my power steering pump seems to be fine...(no Leaks) but the big mess of lines that run into the main steering mechanism seems to be leaking...it runs down my my frame and drips behind the driver side front wheel..now it looks like i need to replace the large controll mech.. has anyone done that before...big job ...small job?? what years carried these parts
I'd recommend that you try pouring in a small bottle of brake fluid into the steering resevior, and fill any remaining with power steering fluid, and drive on that for about 1000 miles. I tried power steering sealers on top of power steering sealers, and nothing seemed to work. Then a neighbor suggested that I try a cup of brake fluid.
At first I was timid and only used about 4 oz. But then I reached the point where I was going to dig into the gearbox, which is what you are about to do. There are a couple seals in there, one of which could be bad. I don't think its a hard job, but it is a pain and you might have to remove the Pittman. So instead of doing this, I said..."what the heck?" I dumped a 12 oz bottle I picked up somewhere on the highway.
The power steering leak became next to nothing. I have not added fluid in about 7 months. I get a spot or two every now and then, but its not enough to warrant doing any work over. I know this sounds unconventional, but hey? It worked for me, and it might for you too.
Autozone sells a rebuild kit with all of the seals for about $30. Though I've never done it before, it only took a couple of hours (excluding the time it took to clean up the power steering fluid that dumped EVERYWHERE when I opened her up). Works like a champ.
