I just finished tearing down my 1951 Flathead V8 and in pure rookie mistake I did not make a note on where the longer and shorter head bolts are replaced when fastening the head to the block.
Does anyone have a diagram or know where I can obtain one that shows the exact placement please
Just take the bolts, one short and one long, and stick them in the holes in the bare head. The same amount of thread will be sticking out of the head surface with the correct bolt. The short ones are along the bottom of the head as installed, the only ones to be sure of are the ones between cylinders. You can make your own diagram.
A good tip is to get a couple extra-long bolts and cut off their heads, and cut a slot in the tops (where the hex used to be). Use those as pilot bolts to hold the gaskets in place and guide the heads down to correct alignment when installing. Use a screwdriver in the slots to remove them after you get the real bolts installed.
