Broken spark plug

Hi
I am new to this forum. A year ago I bought a 2000 F-250 with the 5.4L 2 valve motor. I was changing my plugs yesterday. The number 7 plug broke off. The shell of the plug is in the head still. The porcelain part came out. I tried to use a square easy out but the shell won’t move. Can I drill it out and retap it or do I need to pull my head? What is your guys suggestions on this.

Thank you

I would think the only bet is calling a machine shop , having them drill and tap it, then helicoil it. Shouldn't be any need to pull the head.

I'm not sure if there is an option or not.

You need this special tool kit from Lisle. It works great. You can get it online, but Matco Tool dealers have it too. Also, you'll need access to compressed air and a long wand air-nozzle. If you're anywhere near CT, you're welcome to borrow my Lisle spark-plug tool kit.

Wrong. That tool is for the newer 3V engines.

Using a Helicoil or one of the cheap "fixes" is ill-advised. They fail with Congress-like regularity on these engines resulting in blown plugs.

Check the engine subforum. Lotz of help there, which I have used both for a '97 Expedition and a 2008 Navigator.

Have you been using an impact to remove plugs, and putting a “dab” of never- seize on plug threads, then torquing them into place, for new ones.
I have never had trouble since I started using an impact, “use it gently”, I think the impacts shake the carbon loose from the one or two threads that actually go into combustion chamber. Just saying!!

The one time I looked into doing plugs on my wife's '08 Expedition (IIRC a 3v motor), the recommended procedure to change the plugs involved getting the motor up to operating temperature, then using an impact to remove the plugs. The higher temps + impact apparently makes everything work easier.

I had no desire to work on a hot motor, so I had the dealer do it.

soak the area with Kroil for a day or three and see if you can wiggle it out by hand. If it where me I'd tap it down a bit before pulling up but, I've been down this road before and know the consequences of making stupid decisions.
Another option is to soak for a day with kroil, tap is very slightly down, then crank her up and see if the engine will push it out... Oh forgot to say, maybe put a blanket or something to stop it from customizing your hood.

Use a reverse spiral one and don't spare the muscle. Using an impact gun would be a bonus.

Hi Alloro

You think that will work to get the shell out? I don’t have an impact. I just don’t want drill it out.

thanks

I prefer the spiral ones over the square ones because to me it seems the more I torque it the more it bites.

The spiral ones DO bite harder. The biggest drawback is they also tend to break easier so you've got to make sure you're square to whatever you're removing.
