I’ve got the pistons out of my 49 8BA. Attached are the markings on all 8 and the #8 has STD on the top. Are these factory equipment.
Also in one of my books it says to pull the crank pulley after removing from the block but it seems easier with a 3 jaw puller which I have while it’s still in the block.
Am I missing something or should I remove it later?
Those are obviously Ford pistons, but as I said in the other thread, I've never seen the original pistons stamped STD. If you think about it, production line engines are all Standard bore, so there would be no point to it. Could be tho. What's interesting is the "09T" cast into it; that would seem to be a '39 - '48 piston. I think the earlier pistons work in a 48 - 49 8BA. The manual describes the changes in '50, with the solid skirts and pin offset.
I agree, it would be easier to pull the pulley with the crank in the block, but do you even need to pull it? Are you going to have the crank turned? Be careful pulling it, easy to bend or break the pulley grabbing by the rim. Is it sheet metal or cast iron?
Were you able to pull the pistons out the bottom or did you ream the ridge off?
It's my opinion that someone has been in that engine before. And it's seen poor maintenance. I believe if you were to do some checking, you'll find the G 77 on your bearing is a date code. (July, 1977)
I picked up a ridge reamer and got the pistons out of the top. I am going to pull the crank and start in the valves in the next few days and try to determine the next steps. I’ll turn it I’d I need to do I will worry about the pulley if I’m going to turn the crank
