Do Exhuast Tips help?

Just wondering if exhuast tips make any difference in sound or are they just for looks?

My single in/out FM 40 series sounds horrible (almost sound like stock) and I was wondering if a 3 1/2 or 4" angle tip would make a sound difference? I am looking for an aggressive rumble sound.

My current exhaust pipe is 2" or maybe 2 1/4" and it exits behind the rear passenger tire on a longbed 302 V8 truck.

Thanks for the help!

AFAIK, the larger and longer the exhaust tip is, the deeper the tone you will get. Well the first reason youre exhaust is quiet is because you retained the stock catback piping. If you want sound, you really need to go to 3" tubing with a tip.

Thanks for the help. The stock size pipe was put on by the muffler shop. All I told them was I wanted a FM 40 series installed that would sound good but annoying. I should have been more specific and now I wish I would have!

Thanks again.

exhaust tips helped my sound out alot on my 82 f-150 i have a dual cat-back system with for some reason this is how it is set up ...manifolds to y-pipe to 2 1/4 pipe into 3" muffler inlet then to dual 2 1/4 tailpipes, yea i cut out the cat. but i put a set of 2 1/4 to 3 1/2" 18" long angle cut tips on my set up and it gave it a great sound so in my opinion yea tips help

Thanks for the help. I am going to order a single 4" tip from Jegs. Of course it will probably look a little weird since it will be hidden under the bumper. It would look bad with one large tip coming out from under the bumper and the exhaust tip is to long to exit out of the side because existing muffler pipe in bent nicely above and around the axle.

Thanks

The only real way for more sound is a new y-pipe/high-flow cats.

farmf1-50 get ride of the cats or get a high flow one, and some bigger pipe then that flowmaster will sound much better. The stock cats take a lot of sound away.

If I cut off the muffler, can I just clamp a piece of pipe in its place? Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I would love to just add larger pipes to my flowmaster but I don't want to invest to much.

If the muffler is gone will it be an obnoxious loud or a nice deep rumble? Will it back fire because of the lack of backpressure?

Thanks again!

You can just put a piece of pipe in place of the muffler. It will sound pretty good. My 460 was like this for a while and the cats will provide more than enough backpressure and sound absorbtion.

Thanks for the help! I will probably pick up a pipe from Autozone this weekend and clamp it on.

Thanks again.
