Sensor Questions

97 F250HD 7.3 395+k miles.

Retired work truck been used here on the property last few years.

Hard starting, will run fine then...just shuts off.
No cough no stutter no nothing.
Will not restart.
Let it set a few hours and it starts again.

When CPS is bad, does it still work "sometimes"?
How about the other sensors commonly associated with non start conditions?

In the past, I have been taught electronics are either good or bad, no in between.

Don't see any leaks around HPOP.

Really want to get this truck back in service for snow removal this season.

Possible IPR valve acting up when warms up.
Then works after cooldown.

Yes,most common thing with CPS is that it will start right up again. But good to have a new Motorcraft CPS nearby.
Also if you have to swap IPR,OEM is the way to go.

X2 on the ipr. Had that problem leave me on the highway a couple times. Make sure the nut on the back of it is tight. It would be good to rule out the cps as well. Pretty common thing like FinnishStroker stated

Could be the IPR o'rings, this will cause a no start when hot.

But does it cause the engine to just shut off when running?

Yes because it will stop the oil flow to the injectors

IPR reseal is under 14 dollars from Riff Raff. Would be worth pulling and resealing before dropping 180 bucks on a brand new IPR. I pulled mine for rebuild and I was surprised it even ran. My O rings were very close to going bad.

A shut off is caused by the IPR sticking closed stopping oil flow. This is usually caused by the IPR being wore out and/or dirty.

Mine shut off once on a bridge and I was extremely lucky to have enough momentum to roll off the bridge to clear traffic. To get going again the IPR was the last thing I replaced of course, just didn't want the oil mess. I didn't have my mity vac with me.
