I’m looking to swap a 99 psd into my 76 highboy. I’m thinking it can be done without too many heartaches. The 99 is a zf6 2wd and the 205 from the 76 should handle the power made from the new motor. The only hold up I have is the electrical wrk. Has anyone tried to swap the late 7.3 psd? I want to keep the old interior in the old truck so I want the 7.3 to be as close to stand alone as possible. I would use the 99 hydraulic clutch setup as well. Anyone have any advice for a first time swapper?
Things to consider if using the original drivetrain:
The pickup won't be reliable if being "used". Ford went to 1410 u-joints in the rear driveshaft for a reason. Your pickup used 1310 and 1330 u-joints along with one "ba$tard" at one end of the shaft between the transmission and transfer case. Even the front driveshafts on the Superduty use 1350s. Also, the u-joints in the knuckles of the stock front Dana 44 (1976 should be open knuckle which are a little better than the ultra-weak closed knuckle ones) will hate life if used with any authority...they're 1480's in the Superduty....also for a reason. Stock D44 (depending on snap ring style/GVWR-F) will be a 1310 or 1350.
I wouldn't worry too much about the frame or front axle strength from a supporting-the-weight standpoint but you'll want to find a 95-97 donor for the vacuum pump for your brake booster or just go right to hydroboost if you plan on 99-up engine. The front accessory drive setup is different for the era.
