So my vehicle is currently non-serviceable, due to some minor issues, and I starting thinking to myself that this is the perfect opportunity to send it to the diesel shop nearby and get rebuilt, nothing special, just a truly reliable daily driver, what are the pros/cons, things to look out for, should I maybe do a swap? Join the fummins band wagon? Or just stick to the rebuild idea?
it’s nothing that serious, literally just the belt that runs from the alternator to the fan, I just never have the time in the day to get it/replace it
Understand your budget..... This may sound funny but the way things are going, "parts" are going to be one of your challenges. I'd start a search for a very good parts truck... I know, like looking for a needle in a hay stack.. You might find a roll over in Texas that has little rust and some of the upgrades you are hoping to add to your truck... It never hurts to start lookin'
Hobo
EDIT: here is an example... I have no dog in this fight:
Your engine rebuild budget is $15,000? I think I rebuilt my last 7.3 for something like $500.
Can I ask some background questions? What is your truck? Year, 6.9 or 7.3? turbo or NA? rust bucket or something nice?
I'm just trying to figure out why you want to put $15,000 into what I imagine is a 1985 6.9 NA IDI with some beer dents and rust. Maybe you have a really nice truck and just want to restore it, or maybe you have a unique truck that can't be easily replaced. But if I had $15,000 to spend on an IDI, you could easily just buy a perfect-condition IDI pickup with the turbo with that kind of cash on Ebay.

1990 f350 7.3 with the turbo kit from ATS, I don’t drink, no dents or anything more major than surface rust on the frame, biggest issues are a tiny oil leak, the pivot bolt for the alt snapped off, the doors rattle slightly and the clear coat is coming off a little bit, I just want to restore the truck is all, I just want the engine rebuilt so I don’t have any worry in the back of my mind about anything going wrong when I PCS from Alaska in a year so that’s why my budget is so high, I don’t intend on spending that much but it’s nice to have some wiggle room
4x4 conversion and some power upgrades is where I'd waste 15k, but you could buy a sweet 4x4 for 8, dump 7 in it, and sell yours for enough to do a lift kit and new set of good tires.
Just don't see the point. Seems like it's a really good truck that just needs a few issues fixed and to be driven..
Money can always be spent, no sense in gettin in any rush, never hurt anyone to hold onto it until they're sure

yea I never had any intentions in building a race truck, just an incredibly reliable truck
Nice looking E350. You didn`t state the mileage. Was it used to haul heavy loads,, 5th wheel
vacation trailer? lots of idle time?
That engine if taken care of should easily hit 300K miles. My 86F250 looks like she was rode
hard and put away wet many times before we bought her at 192K, now at 304K.
The rattle of the doors is probably the Striker, either out of adjustment, or the plastic piece the
door locks onto is worn of missing. Some guys use 1/2" Pix plastic tubing, slice it down the side
and slip over bolt. Some of those Strikers when removed, can be unscrewed from the bent metal
piece, then R&R the sleeve. mark around the Striker before you remove it. Think a #50 Torks work
on removing it.
Could also be loose Door Hinge Pins.
In Alaska, sounds like you are going to move, maybe to the lower 48, so I can see why
you want her reliable.
The more info you give, the better the guys can help you.
