Mismatched "cells" will mean one battery hogs all the charging current and never quite gets there, and the other one constantly overcharges and outgasses excessively. Mismatched "cells" are always a big no no. Don't misunderstand, it will start the truck but there's no reason not to do this correctly since you're the one shelling out the cash.
I was fortunate. I've was a school bus mechanic for 12 yrs so I'm familiar with battery date codes. I found two at Sam's both dated 9/20 which worked great for me. Checked voltage and tested both batteries and they both came up great. They're installed now, so we'll see how they do.

Nope, and a great investment I'd do again. The OE Motorcraft batteries, especially on the 2017+ trucks, are leakers and fail frequently in the first couple years. I had mine replaced under warranty (like many others on here) and they promptly started leaking again. Sold them on CL and got the Odyssey units and haven't looked back. Many have not caught it as early as I did and had more damage from corrosion. The tie down is easy to clean up and repaint but if the battery cables need replaced, the cost is out of control. The corrosion is known to creep down under the sheathing and ruin the whole deal. It's a royal pain to swap out but if you're lucky, you can repair just the end. Again, that's only if you catch it early enough. What's odd is that 90% of the time it's the driver side and not the passenger side. There are many theories as to why but no real answer. Anyways, you can keep playing the warranty game until the 3/36 is up or you can do something proactive about it so you don't have to consistently check your batteries for leaks. For me, the cost was a no brainer in exchange for the piece of mind.

For those of you that have purchased the Odyssey batteries how many years of life do you get out of them?

My 2016 still has the original leaky batteries from the factory which is going on 5 years now and I want to replace them before they give me trouble. I will not be replacing them with another serviceable battery that leaks and corrodes so the Odyssey is looking like a very good option even though they are pricey. Like Rodney said it's money well spent to not be worried about corrosion issues.

I just did mine this past spring so I can't attest to their longevity just yet. One other thing to note about them is if you are concerned about warranty, it's easier to get them replaced (if need be) when bought locally. Auto Zone is a retailer for Odyssey and sells at the same price as Amazon. They were on national backorder through Auto Zone when I did mine so I went with Amazon though.

I checked all the local Auto Zones and they don't have any in stock. It looks like Amazon is the way to go at the moment.

You could order online at autozone.com and the local store would be your point of warranty if needed. It looks like they do have them on their website. I would just call to verify they aren't on backorder. Their online inventory isn't always as accurate as Amazon's...

The factory Motorcraft's leaked for the 2011 model too. No way I was purchasing those again and it seems Ford hasn't improved anything in 10 years with their supplier.

I guess I just found my next set of batteries when I need them. I get my truck oiled every year so I'm sure that helps with the corrosion from the batteries. They spray under the hood and the harnesses as well. I'll get a pic of my battery brackets at one point.

Thanks Rod.

Thanks Rod.
When I replaced both of my batteries this summer I replaced the battery hold down brackets too. The brackets were severely corroded.

I also added the battery protector kit with the two felt washers on each battery terminal.

My understanding is that the majority of car batteries are made by one of the following three companies; Johnson Controls, Delphi and Exide.

Johnson Controls (now named Clarios) makes the Motorcraft,

Crown Battery Mfg (a subsidiary of EnerSys) makes the Odyssey. EnerSys also makes the Diehard batteries.

Personally if I have an issue with a Motorcraft I go to the Ford Dealer and it is replaced immediately if defective (within the 3 yr warranty) or pro-rated up to 8 years.

I don't want to have to deal with shipping a battery back (hoping that I will get a new one while not being able to use my car) and some of the reviews on Amazon don't give me a warm feeling.

I get my truck oiled every year before winter here in WNY. I always tell them a heavy application. They spray under the hood also. I'll get a pic of my original batteries when I get my truck back from the dealer. But mine are in great shape. I've got 66k miles. I also treat my battery terminals with the NOCO oil based corrosion prevention goop. Good schit.

My batteries still

But you can buy those Odysseys at Auto Zone. That's what I would do.
