Fuel Gauge Situation

So I replaced all of the gauges in my 78' 4.9l 300 f100 recently and I decided to go with a less expensive fuel gauge for the time being. I noticed my fuel gauge is starting to melt right below the needle (ref. Photo). I know I don't have a top of the line gauge but it works (well if works better than the non-operational gauge I had before). The wires behind it look fine. Has this happened to anybody? What would cause this?

When you wired this, did you use the stock wires for power or run new ones? Smaller gauge wire can cause electrical heat issues. I have Equus gauges for my truck and do not have this issue so far. It could be that just the gauge itself is faulty.

Maybe you wired it so that the light is on all the time, and that's where the heat came from?

If the back of the gauge is removable, it might be good to remove it and try to see what's really happening inside.

I checked the ohm range and it's correct.

The gauge only had female blade connectors with it in the box so I used some wire I had laying around. It was unused, 16 gauge copper wire. Would 16 not be heavy enough?

I can't feel any heat coming from the gauge. I guess it could be something else but what else would be the culprit? I know that blemish wasn't there when I installed the little guy a few weeks ago.

The light turns off with the rest of the dash lights. I daisy chained them all to two 12 gauge wires (+/-).

I'll try popping it open but I don't think it'll end well for the gauge if I do. I guess there's only one way to find out.
