I hate the fact that the A. T. trans on my 5.4 shifts down so fast when towing. I wish I could stick my foot in it and use the torque in the mid to low RPM range. Will any of the performace chips/MicroTuners lower the shift points or allow me to change them so I can use the torque what 'ol Henry built.
i'm sure ken will elaborate on this but after he burnt me a chip there is in fact more torque on hand and willl pull much better in the gear i'm in- especially od since his chip was installed- much more driveability-phil
Lower shift points? Most people want to raise them to take advantage of the wider torque curve the chips/tuners give them. You want the shift to occur at a point where torque begins to fall off yet still put the new gear in the higher torque curve after the shift. The wider the power band, the higher you can make the shift. But yes, that can be done with the shifts if that's what you want.
YES, wider torque bands. Right now the darn thing shifts sooo fast into the next lower gear, the RPM rarely drops below 4000! I know the 5.4 makes torque down lower and would like to use it. The darn thing smells a hill comming and drops a gear or two. If your chip will help this it sounds great.
Okay.... I understand what you mean now. You're talking about downshift, not the up-shift. Yes, you'll see a lot less down-shifting with it. Roughly 10% gain on the HP and a 15% gain on the torque. The modular V8s do very well when chipped.
I have just the opposite problem. I am VERY unhappy with how hard it is to get my tranny to downshift. It's always trying to stay in the highest gear possible, and the result is I cannot take advantage of the high RPM power of this SOHC engine. Will a 91 octane program produce more power and allow my engine to rev longer before shifts under harder throttle?
Yes, a 91 octane program will produce more power. We can move the shift points around as well to take advantage of the added power. Where (RPM) do you want the shifting?

if you have 93 in ky- have ken tune it for that than the 91- i had him redo mine from 91 to 93 and it's much more noticeable-phil
Well, in normal daily driving the shifting is fine...it's better for fuel economy to stay in the highest gear you can. But occasionally I like to play around some, and under hard throttle this thing is shifting at about 3K consistently. This engine doesn't even make good power until 4K....so that's not cool. I heard that a chip will stretch out the shift points to allow each gear to "max out" before shifting, and I also heard it will firm the shifts up to lengthen the life of the tranny by lowering heat buildup. That would be great! I also want to remove the 3K rev limiter in Park, and the 91 mph speed limiter. When I save up the cash I'll let you know. Thanks for the help.
Question.... why do you want to remove the limiter in park? The only reason I can think of with an automatic transmission for removing the park limiter is to blow up the engine!
Yeah, I don't sit in my driveway and rev my engine like the guy in that Porshe commercial. That would be nuts. But on my other trucks I had exhaust systems on them, and every once in a while just to play around I would rev it up to get the teenagers' attention. But this truck won't rev up like that.
You are right, both limiters are safety equipment and are there for a good reason. But it's just that to me it's my truck and I should be able to do with it what I want. I don't like the limiters. I understand your question though.
