Hey folks! I'm finally nearing the end of this transplant but I've got one last major snag. Since my old girl is an 81, she's fitted with mechanical clutch linkage. I already scrounged the push bar off a junked 6.9 but found it was splined to connect, unlike the 81 being a slip on. Should I just find the correct clocking for the push are or would it be simpler to swap out the pedal assembly that is actually meant for a hydraulic clutch? Thanks in advance for any tips
I don't know how the mechanical is setup in an 81, but I do know the pedal assembly in a hydraulic setup take a lot of force in certain places and you don't want it slip and fail.
If I was you, I'd try and swap in a pedal assembly from a later truck with hydraulic clutch. It might be a royal pain in the *** to do, but it will give you chance to replace all the bushing in the pedal assembly as well. They wear out over time and increase drag as well as lessening the movement applied to the master pushrod.
Another thing you'll need to do is reinforce the firewall where the master cylinder installs. These trucks are known for being weak in that area and cracking over time, then the clutch fails to disengage.
Here is the Bushing kit off Amazon.
I bought some from the dealer about a year or so back.
They may be NLA, they still had some in stock at the dealer.
It looks like that's what I'm gonna end up doing. I have a uncle with a few of these and I'm sure he'll trade me straight across. Hopefully it isn't too bad to change it out cause I'd like to get this done before December hits us. Thanks for the info, I'll check it later
If you do that you might want to do the heim joint mod for the pedal linkage as those crappy plastic bushings are horrible, and you'll have the parts out and fairly easy to access already instead of trying to do it on your back inside the truck. The hardest part for me with the reinforcement plate was trying to do it by myself, an extra hand is really nice for alignment. Good luck!
I went back and looked at that Peddle assy I linked to from Amazon.
I noticed it didn`t give a year as to what trucks it works on.
Read some of the feed back from people that bought them.
Looks like it is for the later trucks and won`t work on the 80 - 86.
When they changed the dash`s etc... in 87 the peddle assy changed also.
Here is a good thread I found doing some searching.
Hey that's all good, I didn't expect 87 and post dash parts to all be interchangeable with our bulls. I've gotta run back out to my parts truck this weekend, so I'm probably just gonna end up grabbing one of the 85 assemblies that are out there. Thanks for all the feedback though, definitely gonna be looking into that support bracket after I get this darn thing running again.
