1982 E350 inoperable cruise control

1982 E350 inoperable cruise control
Finally happy with how my 1982 E350 runs, but having an issue with the cruise control. When I press the ON button it does nothing.The cruise servo cable is hooked up to carb throttle lever. I swapped out switch assemblies (in the steering wheel center) with no result. What should I check next?

At 38 years old anything that's still working is a shock to me.
Whatever type of device pulls the throttle needs to be checked its working. Steering wheel switches are too often replaced as the only cause of VSC failure to operate but rarely are they the main or only cause. Since the under-hood devices are subjected to more severe environmental conditions than the in-cabin switches.

I have the manuals for my 85 and 88 van from this same company and they are great. I looked in my 85 manual and it has 27 pages devoted to the cruise control. There is a step by step guide to diagnose the cruise control but it requires referring back to several pages.

I sold a Ford Rotunda Cruise Control diagnostic machine to someone here. Not sure it works back to 1982 but anyway, it was great for proving out the system.

For me, I had a broken cable. I bought replacement stainless steel braided cable and crimp beads and replaced it. Then my cruise control module was dead. Actually it was gone - I think my mechanic pulled it and did not put it back. Maybe it was dead before, I don't know. Anyway, I found one on ebay and it works again.
