Electric vacuum pump install
just sharing some info.
I just installed an electric vacuum pump to insure the dual 8 inch booster and 11inch disc upgrade works to its full potential. Because the engine (272 +20thou) has a cam with 224 duration & 108 lobe angle separation the engine vac is down to about 10-12 inches at idle. The brakes were ok for one stop at cruising speed but hard pedal at low rpm and hard after one pedal depression. The vac pump is a Leed brakes bandit unit and is pretty quiet but when the engine is running I can’t even hear it.
The pump housing is a pretty big unit 6” diameter and 7 3/4 tall. I didn’t expect it to be so large but I found a spot out of the way next to the radiator to mount it. The install was straight forward and didn’t require any additional wire just 1x crimp ring. The improved braking was a huge improvement, a lot less pedal effort. They say the pump pulls 25 inches but I haven’t measured it. I takes about 20 seconds to reach the vac cut off.
just thought I’d share the info incase anyone is looking to purchase a vac pump. I did want to go with the MP Brakes silent drive vac pump but couldn’t justify the price difference- $380 vs $589. They are both rotary vane pumps but I think MP brakes is a lot quicker.
here are a few pics of the install
