E4OD Leaking...Pan or Seal?

95 F150 4x4 SC, SB, 5.8l, E4OD...

Haven't had the truck that long and do t drive much. Was low on fluid when I got it and it threw 628 code. But topped off fluid and its been good.

Its got a small oil leak, and is kinds greasy and oily underneath, nothing unexpected for an old truck.

I'm now seeing a trans fluid leak, and since it sits for weeks at a time, I'm wondering if its the pan or the front seal. There's fluid all over the bottom of the trans, and when I pulled the little inspection plug it didn't seem significantly wet, and didn't drip any fluid.

So my question is will the front seal leak while sitting for a few weeks? I'm assuming the pan could if the gaskets is thrashed.. there is no constant drip, just a wet spot on the pavement under the trans.

I'm hoping I can change the fluid, gasket, filter etc and be good. Your thoughts?

Dan

Clean the ATF from anywhere it collects then drive or leave the truck sit as you'd normally do. Any new fluid and that's the source of your leak.

I'd check the o-ring or seal in the case where the dip stick tube resides---those have been known to deteriorate and leak as you describe.

I didn't think about the dipstick tube...

My next move it to clean everything like you say, but I'm trying to find out if the front seal would leak just while sitting for a few weeks... I know it may leak a but after driving, but this leak continues...like I say, for weeks. Luckily its parked in the street😁... and the leak is a very slow drip, but enough to keep a wet spot under the truck.

Gasket looks like cork, edges chunking off

Bell housing

Pretty dirty in the rear. The fresh drip on the pavement is at the rear of the pan area.

The solenoid pack plug is pretty caked too.

I want to change the fluid and filter, but wonder if I should have the trans pulled and replace the front seal or? If the front seal is OK i may just service it, replace the pan gasket and filter and be good.

Update a d additional question:

Ok so I am very happy with the performance and have had no issues. However the leak from the pan gasket is noticeabley worse when its parked in the street which leans noticed toward the curb.

So I am needing to change the gasket,, which i would likely change the filter too? I see in some gasket and filter sets a reman solenoid pack. Is it worth the extra money for a new solenoid pack or if its not broke don't fix it? Thoughts?

Personally I'd replace the filter and gasket only, especially if the performance so far meets your expectations. Use a Lube Locker gasket, NAPA or better quality filter and let 'er run for a while. Check things out after a week or so of normal driving and see if that was the cure.
