i'm a idiot!!!!
ran the truck hard, not in ''d'' (indicator doesn't move) when i realized what was going on i shifted into ''d''---what a dope-- any way must have boiled the trans fluid--- couple of miles from home the fluid come pouring out were the 7.3 meets the e4od ,didn't smell burnt,, but it was hotas hell
i pulled into a lot, and parked it as soon as i saw smoke from the fluid hitting thr exhaust pipe
i'm hopeing it's just the seal
what do you think---not about me being an idiot-- but about the trans
Mine did that a couple times when I worked it. I filled it back up and it worked for a little longer until I overheated her again and it blew. Fill it up and see if it still leaks. Mine didn't it just all went to the overflow pan.
It sounds like you got the fluid hot and foamed up, which made it leak out the front seal. I would fill enough to get home, and then change out the fluid by dropping the pan. Not a full fluid exchange process, but replace a good portion of it. Drive and see if it still leaks. Might be fine, or could have some damage from the overheated fluid and potential slipping. Does not hurt to try the easy fix first.

I'm still confused at what you "did"?!
he drove her in 2nd gear, which is high rpms and unlocked convertor.
no trans temp gauge.......or he didn't listen to it and stop to let it cool.
added fluid when i got to the lot,,were the truck was parked, but it just poured out when i started it, so we pulled it home now it is, up on jacks,
i'd like to say i know what i'm doing , but i dont. but that doesnt mean i'm not going to try sure wish i had a lift
did it go into gear though?
as long as she went into 1st when full of fluid,id just replace the front pump seal.although it isn't exactly easy lol.ahh well.if your lucky, you'll replace the seal, fill her up and she'll take ya down the road and shift into all the gears for another 100k.
if your not,you just did a lot of work that you'll need to do all over again lol.only a trans replacement rather than a seal next time.
it's not a complicated job or anything, but it's messy and time consuming.i don't like it much myself but iv done it more times than id like to admit over the years im sure lol.
pretty much you just follow your nose type of job.unbolt the obvious and slide her down and back enough to get the TC out.then your there.replace the seal....with a good quality viton by the way.get your seal at NAPA.they have the good one.
you should consider a trans temp gauge too.perhaps a cooler.
at least a gauge though.then you'll know when to just stop and let it cool (if you don't have enough cooler/wind through it etc.)
sure beats heating 'em up.they're not cheap like a gauge.
thanks for the words of encouragement, it did go into gear-- and it did move in the lot ,we had to move it to line it up, to bring it home with a tow bar ----
------------we'll see
front 4whdr shaft down
manual lever off
mlps off ( broke)
speedo cable off
two eletrical wires off
dip stick & tube off
feed & return off
rear shaft & carrier bearing off
starter off
jack in place
ok so here are the questions
how many bolts hold the trans in place
i got 4 off
Most engines I have messed with (gas) have 6 bellhousing bolts, 2 up near the top, and 2 on either side. I don't have a picture of the IDI block, but I think you need to find 2 more, look up higher. You may need to drop the rear of the trans slightly to get the top bellhousing bolts access. Or get to them from the top, whatever works.
well it's mourning ,back at it today---i'm sore.
ya i saw the one on the drivers side up on the top, i gess theres one on the other side
wounder how lone it well take just for those two bolts, i can't even imagine putting them back in
