I have a 94 f150 4x4 , 302, with a 4r70w tranny. When in overdrive at speeds of 40 to 70mph, the tranny will sometimes downshift to 2nd gear, and then shift back into overdrive. This is under cruising conditions on a level road, and it does it with cruise on or off. Other than this the tranny shifts fine.
I checked for codes and there were none. I also checked the tps voltage and it was smooth with no spikes throughout throttle travel.
The speedometer is a little jumpy, as in it jitters back and forth a couple mph. Could this downshifting problem be the speed sensor?
I have a 1995 F150, 5 spd I6 and when I get up to highway speeds it sometimes cuts out for a second and then comes back in. It is either your speed sensor or rev limiter, either way it should be fine. Just because you are on a "flat" road doesn't mean that your speed will stay the same, there are always variations.
You have an AODE or a E4OD in your pickup - unless you have changed it out. The 4r70w came with the new body style and 4.6 engine.
Anyways, it sounds like your MLPS may be bad (if the trucks have these??) Manual Lever Position Sensor tells the computer where you have the selector lever so the transmission knows what to do.
I think it is the 4r70w, which is a wide gear ratio tranny. The AOD-E is a standard gear tranny. Other than that I'm pretty sure they are the same tranny.
Oh well, doesn't matter anyway, still trying to figure out the problem. Thanks anyways.

Hope this helps...
The 4R70W was put behind most 302's from 93 in on up to 00 or 01 . How do I know MY Tranny is a 4R70W and my truck is almost the same except for the Four Wheel Drive.
