Downshift

Hello,
New member - hello to everyone.
I have a 2001 with the V10 and 4R100 tranny. When hauling a heavy trailer on cruise quite often just as I get to the top of a small hill its dropped a couple of MPH and it'll downshift. I'd rather it just drop a few more MPH rather than the wear and tear of downshifting all the time on these small hills.
Is there a way to disable the downshift? Ideally I'd love to have a switch that would leave it in overdrive. Then switch it back after the top of the hill so that on a big hill it will downshift.
Am I nuts for even thinking this?
Thanks,
Eric Olsen
Denver, CO.

I've not seen any products that would force it to hold overdrive, but there are tuners that can get your more power and modify your shift points. One of these might help you stay in overdrive longer.

Head on over to the V10 forum on this site (Modular V10 (6.8l) - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums) and check out some of the threads on the 5Star tuner. Lots of guys seem to like it. I don't have one, but if I needed a tuner this would be the one.

My 5.4L downshifts on every hill while towing our 5th wheel with cruise set. The way I look at it, it shifts all day driving around town so a shift every couple of miles is nothing to be concerned about. It doesn't always shift when it should and like you said, sometimes it waits until it doesn't need to shift before it shifts anyhow. Even my Cummins powered Rams did it with the exception of the 5spd manual in my '98. I've learned to just ignore it as it's never caused me any problems. I bet the V10 sounds good in direct eh?

I'm not an expert on this, but here's my 2 cents.

Whenever I tow anything, I never have it in overdrive. I would think it's harder on the rest of the drivetrain to have it lugging. I also don't use cruise. When I'm towing, I like to be in control of the unit.

Just my opinion

When I had my 97 f250psd with the auto trans it would always downshift on hills. It was better to use the overdrive switch to keep it out of overdrive to prevent the dreaded upshift-downshift syndrome that made my trans slip. When towing I would never have it in overdrive. It was just too much strain on the drive train. I would think you would be better off downshifting and keeping it there to prevent lugging the motor.

No way to lock out O/D with the 5spd Troqshift. My '05 Dodge 2500HD was the same way with it's 5-45RFE faux 5spd auto. Doesn't seem to hurt anything though...

I can lock out of OD, or lock it 'in', or whatever the heck I feel like lol. But this does not help the OP much, sorry.

Head on over to the V10 forum like dually said and at the least do some research about a tuner and maybe talk to Mike at 5 star tuning he might be able to get you a little closer to your goal there...

With a V-10 or a V-8, you should let the transmission select the gear and not worry about it. Your V-10 is not going to over-rev and you're not going to damage anything.

If you want to slow down, ease up on the throttle
