Engine Swap???

2003 F-250 7.3 diesel. Question, I never haul any loads and my truck is a daily driver. Deisel is more expensive, more expensive to repair. Thinking about an engine swap to a gasser. Does this make sense to do? Too expensive? Better to sell and get another truck? My truck is in great shape, interior is great. Any help appreciated

Is your current drivetrain well known and well maintained? And would you be switching to an unknown used gas drivetrain? That would be a big influence for me.

If it were me, I'd leave it be....

You're talking swapping wire hardness, motor mounts, ECM (or PCM or whatever they're called), etc and a well cared drivetrain for an unknown drivetrain or pricey drivetrain if correctly rebuilt.

He's going to be swapping ALL the wiring under the hood, the dash wiring and dash itself. So he needs to find a donor vehicle to source it from.

That's a very expensive swap. And the truck will lose value. You will be way ahead financially by just keeping the truck.

I am told that the operating expense for a diesel vs a gas truck are about the same. Diesel is higher, but more mpg. Gas is cheaper, less mpg. So switching engines into your current truck will save you nothing on operating costs.

This. Your diesel, if well cared for, isn't that costly to repair unless something MAJOR happens - which it won't if you're taking good care of it and addressing issues before they become serious. I had a 7.3 and never had any expensive repairs - just lengthy ones when I discovered I needed to replace the external o-rings on my injectors (that took most of a weekend since I didn't have everything I needed right away). I also had 2 6.0 diesels that never had any costly repairs I didn't cause. A gasser in these years is going to get crap mileage, and frankly if you want to use it as a SuperDuty you pretty much have to get a V10.

If you're going to go for a gasser, do yourself a favor and look into something newer with the 6.2. A vast improvement over the 5.4 in these trucks (not that it was a bad motor, but it wasn't well-matched to these bricks). You'll also be getting more gears in your trans, which helps offset the mileage difference somewhat.

I would keep the 7.3 if it’s well maintained and the truck is in good shape. It’s reliable, gets good mpg’s and is easy to maintain.

If you like the truck, keep it and buy a cheap commuter car for daily use that gets good fuel mileage.
