Coming home on the interstate this weekend, my '99 Ext. Cab 3.0V6 started knocking really badly. Oil pressure would drop to zero then back up, zero, back up, etc. Knocking also had sort of a squeak or squeal to it. Engine has 139,000 miles. No smoke or oil loss. Towed her home and getting ready to pull the engine and tear into it this weekend. Possibly a spun rod bearing? If so, how difficult would it be to put in a crank kit. Would I have to disassemble the top end or just drop the pan and put in a new crank, rod & main bearings? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
If you spun a bearing, you have to be careful about potential damage to the crankshaft ...if the crankshaft and/or the journals are damaged then I believe you are up the proverbial creek, because I don't think the crank is something you can remove/repair/replace without first yanking the entire engine. At the very least you will have to disassemble the entire top end to get to the crank, because I'm pretty sure it isn't coming out the bottom.
If the crank is OK, then you can install new bearings, but you would have to pay close attention to the clearance specs.
No smoke or oil loss, huh? That's strange ...did the motor show any other signs of impending doom before this happened?
