429 rod knock, I think.

I have a 1969 429 that came out of an old country squire that has been put in my 1979 F250 4x4. The truck had no exhaust on it when I bought it but it did run. I just put duals on it and now that I can hear the engine I can hear a rod knock once it warms up. It sounds fine when I start it cold, and the oil pressure appears normal but after it warms up the oil pressure drops to 0 and the number 2 cylinder rod is knocking. I know it is the no 2 cause if I take that cylinders plug wire off it quiets down. Since my oil pressure is dropping to 0 does that mean that my crank will have to be turned or may I be able to get away with just putting a new bearing in it. I am going to pull the pan today and take a look at it but a mechanic friend of mine said I can probably get away with just putting a new rod bearing on the number 2 rod and put a new oil pump in it. What do you experts think????? Thanks Don I am new to this forum and I would like to say hi to you all also. Also after it starts knocking and the oil pressure drops it starts running rough. I assume this is because the lifters are bleeding down because of the lack of oil pressure, but it sounds great until I lose the pressure.

429 Rod Knock

The cylinder that is knocking is the no 6, left bank 2nd cylinder from front. The casting numbers on the head are D3VE A24 or A2V, not sure. This is not a 429, is it?????????? The valve cover says it is from the 460 family. Don

First of all, it may have been knocking for a while there for you will need to have the crank checked, it more than likley needs turning. I t does not take much to mess the crank up.

The head casting numbers you gave can be either 429 or 460, the numbers indicate a 1973 casting.
The corect numbers are more than likley D3VE-A2A, I have a 429 that has these castings and also a 460 with the same. You can get the casting number off the crank and run the numbers or pull a piston, it will have 429 on it if it is a 429. The crank and pistons are the only different parts in the engines from the two. I understand from my machine shop that there is a small differance in bore, 4.360 (460) and 4.362 (429).

Hope any of this helps.
