Front Brakes

Hey guys,

So I did a quick search and didnt see this, even tho I'm sure its been talked about a number of times.

Today, my fronts started grinding. I havent personally changed brakes on my Ex myself yet (I had abud (we'd drink some beer while he did it) but he moved). I'm not worried about the job itself, but I'm looking to get decent rotors and pads. Cant afford the GOOD stuff, and not looking for anything to break the bank. I was recommended NAPA rotors and ebc green pads (6000).

What do y'all think? Also, where do i get new pins and boots, since id like to replace those while Im at it.

If this has been answered in detail, a point to the right thread would be appreciated as well.

Fortunately the Moderator team has created a nice tech folder with tons of good how to's.

Welcome to guzzle's Powerslot/Hawk pads brake Maintenance Web Page

Get some good brake grease like Permatex, Motorcraft, Silglyde or similar for the pins and pads.

Check out Rock Auto. I like Wagner Thermoquiet pads and their calipers and rotors. I ended up with AC Delco loaded calipers and Wagner coated rotors last time.

Rubber hoses should be due for a change also.

While I have not tackled the brakes on the Excursion yet, I always recommend a cryo treated rotor. It helps with warping issues.

I just put on a cheap set from TRQ (drilled/slotted rotors and metallic pads). Got the fronts done, will do the rears this weekend. Pretty happy so far (admittedly only have about 300 miles non-towing and about 25 miles towing). "Seat of the pants" braking feels like they grab better than the ceramics/non-drilled/slotted rotors that I was putting on before (PepBoys did the work all prior times). Smooth braking, tiny squeak from like 1mph to stop in drive throughs, etc. - but I'm expecting that with the higher dust metallic pads.

Did break a ratchet working on them, but other than that the job went pretty smooth. Will report back as I put more miles on these.

So metallic pads > ceramic? I thought it was the other way.

Excursion rotors don't warp. They get transfer from the pads to the rotors which builds up high spots on the rotor giving you at "warped" shimmy. I've changed a lot of brakes on my excursions and quite frankly the high dollar powerslot rotors and hawk pads don't perform better or last any longer than the Chinese made Power Stop brakes sold at auto zone or through the internet retailers.at half the price.

I got tired of the wheel shimmy and general PITA brake problems on my ‘04 4WD Excursion Limited diesel. So I pretty much went all out to fix those problems. I have ADB rotors, Hawk premium truck pads, premium NAPA calipers, Russell stainless steel hoses, totally rebuilt the rear wheels non existent emergency brake and redid all the brake lines from front to back with nickel copper lines. It was not cheap but cheap does not help a bad braking situation. The Hawk pads are the best pads I’ve ever had for stopping performance with very, very little brake dust compared to OEM pads. When I got my Dodge Charger Hellcat the first thing I did was change out the OEM pads for Hawks. As for rotors not warping, I’ve seen a lot of rotors turned and that was not brake dust buildup coming off.

This is why I went with the cheaper ones...figured if they work longer and don't get the shimmy as fast, why not try? So far they 'feel' like they grab better than the OEM rotors, but I don't have a scientific way to really test that.

I don't know enough about metals to know if what I had was warp or shimmy...but in any event, when my brakes would get to about 1/3 to 1/4 remaining, inevitably I'd have a panic braking event and I'd leave it with a warp/shimmy off of the front - 3 out of 4 times it was the passenger side. At first I wondered if it was a stuck slide pin, but this last time when I changed them myself the pins were moving easily and looked well lubricated.

I always use a dial caliper to check and make sure the new rotors are true and within tolerance. Since doing that, I've never had an issue with "warped" brakes (pat transfer).
