I’m currently trying to restore a truck i have close to no background info on and the info i do have is conflicting. If you look at the pictures it says the engine is the 460 with automatic transmission, but the truck is a manual. any help on figuring out which motor it is would be greatly appreciated
The obvious here is the body was swapped. That's a FE engine, its a highboy with manual steering and hydro assist.... Post up some more pictures of the truck.
That would be a 352/360/390 with a body swap. Aka an FE engine. A quick way to tell is where the intakeanifold meets the head. The line where the manifold meets the head is u der the valve cover, the valve cover bolts to the intake manifold and the head, so it would be an FE. A 460 can be identified by the number of valve cover bolts (7). A windsor is a very significantly smaller engine, that includes the 221/260/289/302/351 amd there is also the 351C and 351M/400.
Hmmm. Tell us about the truck. I see that VECI label from 1979, I see a Duraspark ignition, (but not what color grommet on the module, smaller dizzy cap though) and I see that FE engine.
I think '75 and '76 are the only years for Duraspark on an FE, so I'm going to guess that it's in that range, and that the VECI decal came from another truck.
Looks to be a 73 F350 with an FE engine...def not a 460.
How did you come to that? Seriously a 74 F350?
Look at the steering box, notice its a 4wd manual box? See the power steering pump for the assist ram? The duraspark wasn't around in 1973 so I do wonder how you came to this conclusion.
I take it the title matches the VIN on your warranty tag, (the metal tag on the drivers door) and on the Certification Label (the decal on the cab door jamb which faces the warranty tag)?
Next you need to check your frame rail VIN stamping. It's on the top of the passenger side frame rail, basically under the alternator. You might have to do some scrubbing to find/see/read it, but it should be there. There is also another stamping farther back, under the passenger side floor pan.
I wonder if it had a frame swap with engine, or if someone just installed the FE by itself.
The bed might tell a story too. Does it have "Custom" badges, or signs of having had them, below the rear marker lights? If so, the bed is from a '76 or older.
Does it have a fuel door behind the driver side rear wheel? Is there an actual door, or is there just a gas cap? The midship fuel door visible in the picture is from the aftermarket.
'76 is also the last year for the exposed gas cap as well.
So just like I thought. Its a highboy that somebody body swapped. The bed is correct the cab not so much. Whoever installed the rear driveshaft backwards was on a good one that day.

Yes the title matches the VIN on the driver side door’s little metal plate. No custom badges that i see although there was a missing badge of some form on both sides in front of the doors (see pictures). As for the fuel door behind the driver side rear wheel, there’s only a whole were something COULD go.
OK, that hole looks to be from an exposed gas cap. I wonder if your bed is original to that frame. I also wonder what the frame's VIN is.
The missing badges on your cowl would say F100/150/250/350 on top, and Custom, or whatever trim level, below. That badge scheme started in '77.
'76 and earlier trucks say F100/150/250/350 on the front fender behind the wheel, and the trim level is denoted at the rear of the bed there, under the side marker light.
That's a 1979 Ranger XLT cab. Probably a F100/F150. If you could post the vin, at least most of it, the vin could be decoded as to if it is a 100/150 cab. You really need to find the frame vin to know what you really have.
