I have met another fellow RVer who is doing something almost everybody else says is wrong. He has a motorhome that tows a Toyota Matrix on trips. The Matrix has an automatic. He says he hooks up, starts his engine, leaves it in idle, and off he goes. No transmission cooling pump. Certainly no factory set up that allows this. He's another of a small few that have tried this successfully. So far I haven't heard anyone chime into a forum saying they tried this and it failed.
So someone talk me out of trying this with my 2008 F150.
i guess if the transmission oil pump is driven off the front end ( engine)... and the engine is RUNNING , then you have oil pressure as needed to the transmission... A COOLER is needed for extra load, not normal driving...The oil pump would be pushing oil thru any FACTORY stock cooler up by the radiator.
This is going to end up awesome for the output shaft. There is no oil delivered in in neutral, the only way to tow these is with a manual transfer case or a driveshaft disconnect.

This should work fine on a Matrix. It wouldn't use much fuel sitting there idling, and certainly not enough to make any significant difference with the fuel bill considering the motorhome's fuel economy. I imagine the steering would fight the motorhome a little since the power steering is working, but a car that small wouldn't be able to fight too hard a motorhome of any significance. The one downside here is that the odometer on the Matrix will accumulate miles.

Interesting, I would have never guessed this. I even looked in the owner's manual and there is no mention of any limitations with operating the vehicle with Neutral selected. I'm not attempting to argue, I just never knew this. Is there some amount of miles it can go safely with the engine running and Neutral selected?
