One of the first things I noticed about this trans is under light throttle, either upshifting or downshifting, it sort of goes into a momentary coast mid-shift and makes this whirring sound. We've got just over 600 miles on it and whenever I go light on the throttle it does this.
Seems to "think" a bit much about what gear to go to when in throttle transition - ie: you press the go pedal right as you hit a hill - a number of times this results in a sharp shift. Or the opposite you back out of the throttle on a hill and maybe 1 down-shift out of 10 you get a clunk.
We've mostly been using Normal mode for break-in, don't really want to have it lug under 1500 rpm, even though it seems happy to do so. About how long does the learning take on these new fangled 10 speeds? It does seem to be improving, but we're throwing all sorts of driving conditions at it too. I do use Manual versus Tow Haul for downhill engine braking - more controllable it seems.
One thing I noticed yesterday going down a twisty canyon: using Sport mode it does a sort of rev-match on down shifts and is much smoother than using Tow Haul. I pointed out to my Wife that she may prefer that for towing the horses so they don't get jerked around in the hills.
It's the whirring and coast between shifts - I'm sure it must be normal, but never had an automatic do anything like it... I'm rambling now - but any sort of "having lived with it" for some miles experience would be nice to hear about...
I have around 15,000 on my 2018, 10 speed I just drove it like I normally do. I hit "the loop" occasionally every now and again, to blow the" cobwebs" out. It is a little disturbing to me having the trans in 10th gear doing 45 mph and 1,100 rpm. Easy acceleration gets a minor down shift however, hard acceleration will drop way down to at least 3rd. I have had 0 problems so far. Now I have probably jinxed myself.

I only have 7k miles on mine, it seems to be getting better as time passes, not so sluggish etc. A few thousand miles ago I clicked the gear indicator off, that drove me nuts. I monitor some while towing, but regular driving, put it in D and go.
Thanks for the feedback. I figured out how to make the whirring sound go away: Turn the stereo on! More break-in miles yesterday - all hills and twisties. Ran it in Sport Mode and giving it some 3500 rpm light/moderate acceleration and it shifted just perfect the whole time.
Hijacking my own thread: I've been checking the oil level every couple hundred miles. No real change in level, but last check there was slight smell of fuel, and yesterday very strong gas smell on the dip stick oil. Decided I better start picking it up on the break-in so did so on yesterday's drive - results: oil level dropped to top of checked area and fuel smell not as bad... Guess that dictates how the rest of break-in goes...
I've heard the whirring every once in a while, always on almost-new trucks and always with a quiet cabin (no blower, no radio, no anything else, windows up, no noisy traffic nearby). MY guess is it is something that will make less noise as time goes on, and you hear it because nothing else is happening while it is deciding which clutches to engage.
If it is louder on yours than I describe, you might want to complain about it. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks! I did have to point it out to my wife as she didn't really hear it - but once she knew what to listen for she could... I'll check as we get some more miles on it and see if it is getting quieter or goes away. It is like you describe - not very loud...
No strange noises like that in the wife's truck (she would have pointed it out to me already), but to the one comment about 10th gear at 45 mph - That's got to be a programming thing for the 5.0, her 2.7 Eco won't go into 10th under 58 mph in any of the drive modes.
In normal drive mode my H.O. 3.5 will get into 10th gear at 45mph when accelerating normally (not hot rodding).
Ours does too - and I have yet to put it in Eco mode... A couple of times, just 'cause I had to try it, I rolled on the throttle at 1000 - 1200 rpm and it never downshifted. This thing is impressive, my 6.0 won't do that...
Still trying to figure out this 10 speed trans. It's my first Ford with a auto and first F-150. I have the 2018 5.0 and so far I enjoy the Sport mode the most and the shifts are the best in that mode for me. The eco mode, I don't know if its my driving or somethings not quite right at the lower rpms in 9th or 10th and needing to give it some gas, but the reaction seems to be slow to down shift and can be noisy at times but not all the time. One thing I am trying to figure out in the occasional clunking on start up and initial shift out of park that I get. Again not all the time but does not sound good at all when it happens. Time will tell...

See, her's won't. At all. Best it'll do is 9th gear under 57 mph. Gotta be a gearing/power/tuning thing. I do know that at 55mph in 9th, it's turning about 1300-1400 rpm, and at 58 when it will go into 10th, it drops to about 1100-1200. I figure if it went into 10th at 45 then it would probably stall.
Gee, I'm glad I bought a '17 before Ford came up with Eco Mode. Just Normal, Sport and Manual. For fun there's always Sport Mode + Advanced Sport Trak Mode as well.

I'm not even familiar with Eco Mode. I had a 2017 Raptor and now a 2020 Raptor and they don't have Eco Mode.
