What exactly is a "Dusted Engine," I have heard alot of people talk about it. What causes it, and are there any tell tale signs of when it is or has happened?
A dusted engie is the end result of a poor sealing air filter. K&N and other aftermarket filters are notorious for this as well as the 97 and older trucks. Basically, the filter doesn't seal well and debris goes around the filter and into the air intake. These small particles and sand sandblast the turbo intake impeller and then into the cylinders. on "dusted" engines, you can usually remove the intake tube at the turbo and see that the leading edges on the impeller are worn away. Same thing happens inside the engine when the sand and particles enter the cylinders. The result is loss of power, blow-by, and compression loss. This is not warrantable through Ford so make sure your air filter is doing it's job!!
Does any one have pics of the turbo blades, dusted or un-dusted? Just so I know what to look for? I know what turbo blades look like, I just don't want to miss something, Thanks!
