Fuel pressure problems

Well I finally got the energy and tired of not having my truck. I did the jug test on it. Lines run into a 5 gallon can.

Did a tour around the area. Lots of WOT and making turns. Pressure stay at 61 high and down to 57 WOT. So I'm gonna drain the tank today with a drill pump, handy little tool. Here is the question. Should I just buy a new tank sending unit or just wait and see if or it is possible to clean and save old one? 116000 miles on truck. What y'all think.

Fuel press looks good.
You can drain the tank with the fuel pump .
With spare part orders I would wait until everything is removed and inspected.

Yah I have the extra plug to power pump, I rigged it up to test pump via Bismics idea.

I'll have both out there. Witch ever works best I'll use. Might do a little of both. 😜

There really isn't anything to the sending unit. Just a couple of tubes with different plastic tips and a level sensor. I'll never understand why they're so ungodly expensive for what they are. I would try to clean it if that's all the problem is.

Good idea running the return back to the gas can. Hard to run out of fuel that way like I did. Luckily it happened as I was pulling into the driveway.

Both lines run to can. I went out and fpsiphon all the fuel out. 1/2 tank = 17 gallons. Took a while but tank is empty. Today I will drop it and take a look at the sending unit. I have a friend coming by to help. I am looking at a herko unit for $75, if I need it. The sending unit part of it seems to be fine, it's the pic up that is giving me the trouble. I'll take a corner or accelerate real fast and my pressure drops like panties at a Motley Crew concert. So I'm thinking the pic up foot is just about clogged. We'll see hopefully today.
Good thing is, I can drive the truck if need be with my can rig.

This seems a little familiar. Did you see my thread? I ended up putting a sump on my tank because I couldn’t find a decent pic-up foot.

Didn't get nothing done on truck today. a friend called this morning and needed help. Bank account getting low so I went and tore out some cabinets and replaced with new, installed new counter top and back splash. Quick money. My leg is sore as he'll but, that's life. I'll try and get on tank tomorrow.

No, tank is drained. I have basicly parked it for now. I fire it up every other day drive to store here and there to get up to temp and charge batteries up. Have the 5 gallon can and feed and return lines run in it. Been doing small jobs and have not had time to work on it. Leg bothers me a bit from working. I'll get it done.
Thanks for asking.

Yeah, those small jobs sure do drain your free time.

Keep that leg elevated as often as possible. It will get better.

Well had a day off and time to pull tank. Not bad, but what an adventure. Did by myself. To all looking to do a tank removal. Be prepared to fight the two fill hoses. I think I spent more time on that than all the rest of the job. I got the 3" off after about 20 minutes of prying with a screwdriver to loosen. 1"1/2 hose, not so lucky. Cut it and will replace.
The problem, as we all guessed was the foot disinagrated and is in pieces in the tank. It will take some cleaning and a new foot. I might just buy a new unit altogether.
took some pics.

One good thing is there was very little, little water in tank.
You can see filter screen in back of tank.

Would have been a lot easier if you had disconnected the top of the filler neck from the bed, although the hoses probably needed replacing anyway.

While it's apart you should blow out the lines from the HFCM end to make sure you didn't get any pieces of the foot in there.

Also, it will make assembly easier if you were to replace the balance tube with a fuel hose.

Fuzz, I did take the 3 screws out of filler neck. It really didn't help. The filler neck ends where in the hose's about 2 1/2 " I twisted pulled sprayed wd40. No luck on 1 1/2" hose. What are you calling the balance tube?

In addition to the 3 screws, there's also a hose clamp that holds the filler neck to a bracket that's mounted to the bed.

At both top ends of the tank, there are small barbs with a length of rubber hose (front one has an inline vent). Those hoses attach to a piece of rigid fuel line that's mounted to the frame. I found rust in that rigid line, so I replaced it with a continuous length of hose, which means two fewer connections to mess with while you're fumbling around trying to hold the tank up. It was Jack's suggestion and a damn good one.

Btw, that length of hose in the pic was perfect. Wish I had measured it for future reference. Also I think I had to get 7/16 hose, and found Napa to be the only local store that stocked it.
