On my 76 Ford F250 the speedo points below the 0 when stopped as you can see in the picture below, Can you just pull off the pointer? I have tried this before but I always broke the needle. Are there any tricks to this problem?
Yes, you can pull them off. I just replaced my speedo with another used one and swapped the needle I had painted previously to the new one. Or just hold it on the back side and rotate it until the needle is at zero. Either way, be gentle- the center pin is pretty thin and seems like it would would not be hard to bend.
The best way to fix it is to pull the speedo head out of the cluster. Flip the speedo head upside down, & look at the back. Slightly to the right, below the odometer numbers, you'll see a small metal tab attached to the frame. There is a corresponding tab on the drum that moves the speedo needle. Use needle nose pliers to bend the tab on the frame to get the needle to "0". It shouldn't take much.
I've tried to remove some needles by pulling, but have always damaged them. They are firmly attached.
