Ive had a 2017,2018,2019, and now a 2020.
im pulling same loads over same roads as my other trucks but my engine brake wont hold back very well.
It almost feels like it speeds up or is free wheeling before it starts working.
One hill i come down all the time I never used to use my brakes now I use them all the way down off and on.
When it acts like its picking up speed the first reaction is to step on brakes.
mine does not act that way. is it on auto or on for the braking?
What would happen if you switch to manual mode on the tranny?
Also, are you in tow haul?
Its on auto and Ive tryed tow haul off or on it does the same thing. Its a bit scary when it takes off like its picking up speed when you are excpecting it to slow down.
Yes except manual mode downshift automatically at the worst times. I find mine trying to go from 5th to 3rd at the worst moment mostly when I am heading into a curve on a grade. The truck jumps and gains speed during the shifting.
Was just stating the conditions under which I've had the best luck with the engine brake. I use it when pulling my 5th wheel camper, so the trans is in tow/haul and with the engine brake in manual I can hit the service brake pedal to get the slowdown process started and then the engine brake kicks in and slows me down. Where I live it's flat though so I don't have any experience with it on hills or mountains.

Need advice if this is normal. Doesn't happen all the time. Was on the interstate going around 70 mph and had to accelerate to get out of a tight situation. The down shift was perfect for the acceleration but when I let off the accelerator quickly after the acceleration, the transmission went back into 10th but felt a thud. I couldn't look down to see what gear it downshifted to but was thinking if the transmission went from 7th or 8th, right back up to 10th, this might be the reason for the felt thud. Any ideas????

Has not happened to me but the programming for these transmissons when you hammer on the gas sucks. If I get on it, towing or not, and let off, it will not shift up. It sits in whatever gear it has downshifted to for a good 20 seconds revving at high RPM. Then it will finally shift up.
I put mine in D and drive. I have been amazed how the truck seems to know to slow me down on hills, don't hardly have to use the brakes. So smooth I barely feel it shifting. I don't have anyway to tell what gear I am in and glad of it. Seems like it causes unnecessary stress. Why do you want to be watching the gears all the time, it's an automatic. lol

That would annoy me too! Today, I disconnected the batteries for 30 min hoping this would allow the transmission to go through the learning process again. Don't know if this will help but thought I would give it a shot. Thanks for input and experience....

I hear you. Normally I don't feel the shifting either. It amazes me to see what the transmission is doing going up and down hills. Maybe it's a pilot thing, watching and listening for anything unusual at all times.
