I'm glad you guys like the PM-22 so much, and that gallon price is tempting, but could somebody please explain what's so great about it? Is there some detailed independent study touting its effectiveness or giving it a rating that surpasses all other diesel fuel additives?
Unfortunately, my experience owning this truck has made me skeptical of Ford's engineering prowess. I could give many examples...hack, hack - Ford Gold coolant - hack, hack....but you've already heard it all anyway.

Years ago there was an additive called Gold Eagle Diesel fuel supplement. Same bottle, same smell as PM-22 but half the price. Gold Eagle is the parent company of Sta-Bil. A few years ago the prices rose to the same or a little more than PM-22 so I quit using Gold Eagle and started using PM-22. About the same time I was making trips FL-TN every month or so and decided to do one trip with no additives, saw no difference in mpg. I've made the run many times since with no additives and got the same result, haven't bought PM-22 in over a year. New injectors made the most noticeable difference in running quality and mpg's, changed mine @ 175k and now just over 235k..
If the orange man bad crowd gets their way we won't need any additives, they will have us all driving golf carts.
I've used Archoil 9100 for every oil change since I bought my truck. The one time I didn't use it, I noticed a difference (in the form of what felt like a cylinder was firing intermittently) almost immediately. Dumped a bottle in the crankcase and within an hour the problem went away. Yeah, I'm sure I could use new injectors at 285k but $50 per oil change is a whole lot easier to swallow than $1800 for injectors.
Directly from a Sta-bil rep. If you compare the 20oz Motorcraft bottle it is identical to the Sta-bil Power formula, he confirmed zero difference, simply relabled with a Motorcraft label.
Alright, I have 2 bottles of this archoil stuff that I'll go through (500 gallons of treatment lol) and then I might try the Motorcraft treatment. Has anyone else used this particular archoil kind or done a comparison? I guess I'll do some research on both.
I used Motorcraft when I first got my truck but have been using Archoil ever since. Some of my injectors are original and I have 232,000 miles. For the little amount of Archoil that you use each fill up it ends up being very inexpensive. As far as actual testing goes, I got this answer directly from Archoil when I was deciding to either stay with it or go to Optilube.
"We measured lubricity improvements in diesel fuel treated with AR6200 using the ASTM D6079 method while doing some product development, but we don't advertise this information to customers. Different fuels will respond differently to a given lubricity improver, so the only way to compare two fuel additives ability to improve D6079 wear scar results is to measure the improvement using the same fuel as a baseline. We saw an improvement of 170 microns in one example, at our standard treat rate."
Optilube has some published tests that show improved lubrication but again, much more expensive than Archoil per treatment. I've been happy with Archoil and my diesel mechanic said he sees cleaner fuel systems on truck he works on that use it for what that's worth.

I have yet to see ANYTHING that increases fuel economy besides a soft throttle foot and highway driving down hill with the wind at your back. For my money, the point of additives is longevity. With the reduction of sulfur and the addition of bio-diesels, not only has lubricity been significantly lowered , but it also makes the fuel significantly more hydrophilic. Here's some great reading on the subject:
Also, here's a study that was done in 2007 on lubricity characteristics of additives. I know it was a looong time ago, and it doesn't include PM-22 or Archoil, but it's still an interesting read.
