2005 Excursion V10 Question

Boss has a 2005 with a V10 I'm going to dig into tomorrow. Been sitting for a couple years. Roughly 220,000 miles. He was told it needs a new motor.

Symptoms as told to me - Starts fine and idles fine. Runs fine down the road for about 2 miles and then the temp guage pegs and it loses power. Sometimes he can shut it off and restart and it is back to normal. Sometimes he has to wait a while and then it runs fine again to get it home. Says coolant level is fine. Friend told him it was a head gasket or cracked head.

What I have observed - starts and idles fine. Have idled with AC for over and hour in 95 degree weather. Idles smooth. No coolant in oil and no oil in coolant. No codes but it has been sitting without batteries. I haven't driven it yet.

Ideas? Is there a failsafe that cuts power when the temp sensor is reading hot?

Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor or

Cylinder head temperature sensor (CHT)
  • If the CHT sensor conveys an overheating condition to the PCM, the PCM would then initiate a fail-safe cooling strategy based on information from the CHT sensor. A cooling system failure such as low coolant or coolant loss could cause an overheating condition. As a result, damage to major engine components could occur. Using both the CHT sensor and fail-safe cooling strategy, the PCM prevents damage by allowing air cooling of the engine and limp home capability.

Thanks. I am a Ford fanatic but in the world of 60's and 70's cars and pickups as well as 7.3 Powerstrokes and I wrench on HD trucks (Peterbilt, International, etc. ) so I'm very familiar with limp mode. This is my first go around with a Triton motor though I had an F150 5.4 that performed flawless for 187,000 so I never really dug into it. Was really hoping the V10 had a limp mode issue that matched my symptoms. I'll swap out both temp.sensors tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks again.
