2016 F250 - 80K miles - made a big noise today like a backfire as I got on it pulling out, and immediately felt like it was missing or skipping. Was only a few minutes from home - limped back to the house. Engine light is now on. The kicker - found a 2 1/2" x 1" steel ring in my driveway - like something fell off. Starts fine - sounds fine at idle - but has that stutter feeling. Nothing leaking. No clue. Maybe the piece of steel is just trash ?

Thanks peeps. Took it out this morning - definitely still "missing" or "skipping". If it was a gasser, I'd look at plugs. Might be the dreaded injector. I'll take it in Monday. I've got a powertrain warrantee - we'll see what happens. I do need to get my own code reader.
The "part" I found is just a carbon steel ring, exactly 2.5" round by 1" thick - thinner than schedule 40 pipe. I'm guessing it's just trash that ended up in the driveway. It confused me though, because it did have some type of thin film on it. But nothing is leaking out from under the truck - if it had ejected a piece that big, I should be able to see something. Compression is still good as far as I can tell - nothing coming out when I remove the oil cap. Idles just fine.
I think it's an injector. When it "misses" - I don't hear the engine winding - so I don't think it's a transmission issue. And as little as I drove it, it did get a bit better. Again - that points to an injector, right ?
Well - thanks again for everybody that replied. Truck is fine - it blew off the cold side intake to the turbo - then the damn thing went into limp mode and then started re-mapping the transmission.
Long story short - I'm going to have to get a code reader. And then I'm going to have to learn about these modern diesels. And start doing some of these things myself, and re-setting my own fault codes. Still like the truck - I just need to get up to speed on all this stuff.
And again - thanks for all the offers of help. Appreciate it.
