Love my DRW. Nothing pulls a fiver like a dually. I have a 350, and it is great for me and is my daily driver in the city. I would like the upgraded breaks and better turning radius of the 450, but the trade off is a bit rougher ride and odd tire size. For me, the F350 makes the most sense, though I may spring for a 450 next time, though that will likely be a good while.
How much over payload are we talking? 100lbs, or 1,000lbs?

The other ATC is right...they will have absolutely no problem selling the truck you initially ordered. And like another person said...once you look at the duallies...you might as well check out the F450. It's a much beefier truck with a better turning radius.
Get the dually. Whether you drive it daily or not. Daily driving a dually is no big deal.
And yes get the camper your wife likes.
Happy wife
Happy life.
How will the dealer react? Hmmm. Well, the sales manager will probably reach into a desk drawer, pull out a chrome-plated 25 Auto. He'll shoot you in the knee and then sit there laughing and swigging from a bottle of Jack Daniels while you crawl around on the floor. Yep. You definitely gotta' consider that outcome.
I went from a F150 to a F450 and have never regretted the decision. The dually is easy to drive and handles well. I do not tow anything but still like the look of the dually. As far as tires are concerned I swapped wheels and tires.
I guess it depends on what ELSE you will use the truck for. If you will be driving it other then for towing, I would tell Wife to pick a smaller trailer.
Really, think long about it and chat with your Wife. If you are to drive this a lot, ask her if she would like to put the $$$ into the tank AND be the one driving it all the time unloaded.
As a Female I can tell you that you need to sit down with her and have a serious chat with pen/paper to put Numbers down about Fuel, Ins & trailer costs.
PLUS if you are going to order now you won't have it till Winter time anyway
To be fair to my wife, once you start looking at the additional space and comfort provided in a fifth wheel, it is hard to settle (maybe not the right word) for a travel trailer. There is also the claim by many that towing a fifth wheel is more comfortable (again, different terms could be used/argued) than trying to tow a big travel trailer.

Thanks
Additional space and comfort, and they are easier and more stable to tow as well. We started with a 34' fifth wheel and an f250 superduty, went to a bumper pull 33.5 foot toy hauler travel trailer with the same f250. We've regretted the decision to go to the bumper pull ever since. We're now going back to a fifth wheel and a dually to pull it.
Like others have stated, it shouldn't be any issue at all. I am planning on ordering a new 350 soon and my dealer just said to let him know when and he'll get it on order. He wants me to go ahead and do my build so he can get it in the system. Told me that if it showed and I wasn't ready or didnt want it when it arrived, he would just sell it to someone else so no biggie.
I did the same thing. I tow an 8,000 pound travel trailer and had ordered a max tow F150 with plans on putting on e-rated tires and new shocks. About 3 weeks into the order, I decided if I was going to try and turn the F150 into a 3/4 ton (hyperbole), I might as well just order the 3/4 ton. My dealer was fine with it. In fact, dealers are often limited in what they can order, so I think he may have secretly been happy by the decision because he got a more marketable truck to sell.
Go with the dually and like others have said give the 450 a hard look. I went from a SRW 350 to a DRW 350 had my heart set on a 16 wound up ordering a 17, couldnt be happier. Ive towed the same 5er with my SRW and my DRW, I wont go back to a SRW even if it was my daily driver.
And I want to add, if you end up being like a lot of the rest of us, that fifth wheel won't be your last RV. If you want to upgrade from there, you will still have a truck that's able to handle a heavier trailer, meaning you possibly won't have to buy a new truck also. LOL!
I did exactly that with my 1999 order. I originally ordered a SCLB, and changed it to a CCSWB. My dealer sold my first order before it was built..
The way dealers make money is obviously sales. I doubt added inventory and a chance to sell another truck would be received as a negative.
I doubt the dealer would care. I mentioned to my dealer that Ford was buying back my 350 and I “might” need to order another. 5 weeks later I called him an told him I need to order a 2021. He called me back and said he already special ordered a 2020 for me exactly like my 2019 was configured but i didn’t want it it was not a problem because he could sell it quickly and he would place another order for me.
Another local dealer was jumping up and down that they received a Superduty finally.
