Originally posted by AG4.0 You guys at tdiclub are right, us dumb ford truck drivers don't know nuthin bout diesels and low end torque. We all want S2000 engines in our trucks because we want to rev them to the moon. Seriously though, the TDI's may have an advantage up to maybe 20 MPH, but it's tested 0-60 time, I have heard as fast as 12.4 seconds, and I'm talking stock, speaks for it self. No I haven't driven one, but every review I've read on them says they are slow in comparison to the gas motors. Sure, you can mod them all you want, but stock off the showroom floor they ain't all that. But hey what do I know, I'm just an ignorant Ford truck driver. Oh by the way TDI owners, ever hear of Powestroke or any of the other big 3's diesels for that matter?
My thoughts exactly, and thats why I put my .02 cents worth in over at the TDI site. Anxiously awaiting a reply
Interestsing post. Found this link on the VWVortex site. I'm actually looking to trade my '03 Silverado in for a '04 TDI....just don't use the truck enough to justify the $$$.
The TDI can be a serious sleeper, especially if modded. I'm hoping that afterwards I can afford get a VERY used truck, hopefully a Ranger. They're reliable and affordable. My dad has a '92 F150 and it has never let him down.....ever! D@man good truck!
The two vehicles are built to perform two different functions...apples and oranges. JMO, but don't underestimate the power diesel.
BTW....The Silverado has had the check-engine light come on twice with only 7000 mile on it.
Wait no more on your reply. I bear some responsability for all this discontent, as I posted the link that started all this. It was supposed to be in good fun, but apparently got blown all out of shape. I feel that we cannot characterize a whole group of people by one person's post.
People here are just as enthusiastic(rabid?) about their cars as any group of die-hards - and are liable to cheer them on just as hard. I am also a Ford truck owner - can't haul big stuff home to my acreage in my Beetle. I'd love to see your diesel, and I bet driving it is a blast. But again, like some of our cars, it is pretty heavily modded. Next time I get up Abilene way from the Hill Country, I'll buy you a beer, and we'll laugh at the gassers!
WXBoy, I'd be more than happy to trade you for my 98 4.0L 5spd 4x4 Supercab for your truck with the SOHC. I'm selling at a Ford dealership now but I've only driven one new Ranger so far, an 04 FX4 4.0L auto. Seemed pretty powerful to me and I broke the tires loose a few times, but I haven't had it on the freeway yet. However, if I unload the 800lbs in the bed of my 98, I can break those rear tires loose, no problem. I love my limited slip when it rains too. Nothing better than making a real sharp corner by throwing the rear end around. Need to rebuild my LS, but when I first got it I could easily break both loose on dry pavement too. Pulled over 4k lbs for a GCW of 8800lbs and pulled it through the mountains, kept 55-60 up hills. This is even with the 5spd manual. I'd like to get a trailer behind a new Ranger but that's not going to happen until I own a new one. I'll have to take the 4.0L SOHC out on the freeway soon and see how it stacks up. And no, I won't be getting rid of my 98 when I do
I'll have to look at my used inventory for a Jetta TDI and see what they're made of...
