EXACTLY. I did research on the Jetta because I actually considered buying one at one point. (48 miles per gallon sounds sweet to me). In the course of my research, I noticed that the power rating and 0-60 time for the Jetta TDI is awful as you stated. THAT is why I assumed I'd pull ahead of him easily to switch lanes. WRONG.
I got into the throttle on my 4.0 pretty good, and that guy stayed out in front of me the whole time. I couldn't believe it. I was already discouraged with the 4.0 because I never have felt like they are very gutsy down low, but this experience just really made me mad. Ford is advertising 207 Horses, but you have to literally redline the engine to get there. I want my OHV 4.0 back!
With the addition of a simple chip (teaching that turbo to huff op some more boost) the TDI can make 143 hp and 214 lb/ft... making it likely quick enough to take your truck. Mass is the enemy, gentlemen.
those diesel can be modded just like a cummins diesel it might have had an exout chip, bigger injustors, big turbo.for starters.A friends dad has one for a tinkerin car and he has it 245RWHP right now and more to come! Don't mess with a diesel you'll get spanked by Kevins 02 TDI 6spd Man
when did they switch from OHV to SOHC? I have a 99. I think it has the OHV. I just got it so i havent really raced anyone yet, but i know a jetta won't go where I did yesterday. Two girls at my school have jettas. I guess i'll have to get em at a light and see. As for low-end power, my truck has plenty, but once you get up there in the revs it seems a little weak to me.
I know I've already replied, but man, I've driven two SOHC 4.0's and they were tons stronger than my OHV. One was a 97 Explorer and the other was the 03 FX4. I think you just need a heavier foot cuz the jetta diesels times aren't even close to the Ranger, unless of course it was tweaked a bit.
Unless you know the owner of the Jetta you couldn't know what engine it has, or the modifications that have been done to it. If the Jetta was a VR6 instead of a TDI, then it would stand to reason why you got beat. Even if it was a TDI it could have had propane injection on it. Injecting propane on a diesel is similar to injecting nitrous on a gasoline engine. I have watched a dually Dodge with the Cummins and propane injection run in the 12's through the quarter mile. You got beat by a sleeper. I had a OHC 4.0 and that thing rocked. I also had a pushrod 4.0 and the newer one is much better than the old. Believe it.
I use to own a Jetta TDI with the 5-speed. The test magazines do are with bone stock tight engines. For the first 10,000 miles, mine seemed slow and never met the mileage estimate on the window. Once broke-in, it was a sleeper and regularly turned 52-55 mpg. If you short shifted at 3000 rpm, this little car would plain scoot. I'm not surprised that you were beat by this diesel.

what is 245 rear wheel horsepower gonna do for you in a front wheel drive car?
are you sure you didn't get beat by a VR6 someone had sleeperized with a TDi badge?
Seriously you must have a big problem to lose to a Jetta, even if it is a TDI. Granted, you guys don't understand the immense torque output of a diesel, but my 4.0 Explorer will run an 8 second 0-60. I have pulled off 7s before. You show me a TDI that can do that stock. Seriously, my SOHC will smoke a LOT of cars. I have beaten a 300ZX non-turbo if you want to know how powerful my SOHC is. Throw some 4.10s and get that motor to rev up into its powerband faster, and the SOHC will be one of the best motors ever. Peak torque is 3,400. Once you hit that, it should pull like a demon upto 6K redline. I'm happy with my 4.0 at least. Maybe I just have a freak.

I met one of these at a stoplight at lunch and needed to get out ahead of him to change lanes. When it turned green he smoked me. What's up with that???

Stoplight racing. TDI Torque coming on between 1700 and 2500. In a distance that short, it could have been a stock TDI and done that. If it were chipped, or had oversize nozzles, it would have been much faster. Did it run like a freight train - lots of smoke? If not, it was probably *stock*.
I have 1 2000 F-150 and a 1999 TDI. No contest - the TDI would win light-to-light every time. These little diesels are not as slow as you might think, they'll also run over 120 - very securely - right off the showroom floor...
