Anyone know what the oem boot is made from? I replaced both my fron cv axles about a year ago.....6 mos into it, i noticed the inboard boot on drivers side lieterally fell apart where it gets clapmed to the axle.....Yesterday while chaingin oil, i noticed the pass side inboard one is now literally fallen aprt also. It right around where the clamp goes. Nothing is binding, theres been no changes in drive geometry. I just want to replace it this time with one that has a boot that can handle it
Can't remember what it is made of, but a lot of use heavy waterproof canvas wrapped around and clenched down. Mind you we use it on mud trucks and are looking at it a lot.
It's a good question. I recently did a boot on an '01 Ranger and used a Dorman replacement. It seemed fine but the rubber was noticeably thinner than OEM. I did NOT use the split-boot-glue-together deal as I just don't trust them.
Actually there was a Motorcraft kit available but I couldn't wait for it. The MC kit was more comprehensive, or at least it appeared to include the e-clip that retains the stub shaft (which got mangled during disassembly)
I've now learned anytime I'm around a scrap CV shaft I'm gonna pound it apart and start hoarding the wire e-clips
