I have a couple of questions for all of my fellow truck enthusiasts. (Translate; completely insane people who take someone else’s piece of junk and rebuild it into something driveable)
I am going to an auction that has a '48-50 F-8 wrecker that is in somewhat good shape (read above statement) and is complete, the engine is even free and turns by hand. Over the years, much to the consternation of my wife who doesn’t quite share my love of old Ford trucks, I have bought quite a few trucks. All of these trucks, except my panel, were parts trucks but I loved them all the same This one might push her over the edge
My questions for all of you are:
Would you go for it (the wrecker that is)?
If you ever bought a truck that your better half didn’t agree with how did you handle it and how did it turn out? Mine gets mad for a while but eventually cools down.
I think the above questions could provoke quite a bit of good reading so don’t be bashful and reply. You can even embellish your story a little (like that won’t happen) tell us how you are the one who wears the pants in the house, yada, yada…….
I'd say go for it Bob, I know its cuz of guys like you that I have the parts I need to work on my truck, (BTW, the doors and bed are going to work out great).
As far as dealing with a significant other in situtations like this, I don't have any words of advice (ie, I'm still single) so you may have to fall to some of the "older" guys on the board for advice there.
Oh, and bob, you could always keep your eyes open for a 52, I still could use some more sheetmetal Like all you need another excuse to haul something else home.
I'm sure you will miss her for a while, but you’ll get over it and still have your truck!
It’s a tough call Bob, especially when you consider that she might just stay mad and not leave you. My experience has been that they will forgive you in time….but winter is approaching and the nights are long and cold in Wisconsin.
Never had a wife, but I'll use the tricks me and dad used on mom to get ours. First off, hopefully the truck is fairly decent looking(i.e one color, fairly vibrant) and at least make her think it's as nice of truck as you payed for it. Use the old sales pitch, "honey you just don't find these everyday, and this one I can get cheap!" Make sure all expenses are paid off to the best of your ability. I know alot of your wifes are different, but my mom couldn't do much more about another truck than put my dad in the doghouse for a month or two and he'd still have the truck. Whatever you do, don't lie, she'll always have her ways of finding it's true cost. Do as she pleases before you by the truck and a few months after then ease back to the old you and hopefully your good to go. I can hear all you married guy's out there, "look at idiot, he's obvisouly never been married", oh and I'd go for it! -4speed (the bachelor)
i have to say i married a women whos father rebuilds cars and she grew up around the garage and car shows. she doesnt mind at all that i spend my money on truck parts and my time in the garage. mainly she has a 68 camaro that is next in line.
I am using a multiple step method. First, after looking at it last night I told her I saw an old Ford. Today, after going back to look at it with a friend, a self professed lover of everything automotive and junk, I told her that it was kind of a nice truck. The next step is Thursday morning when we go off to work, well she will being going, I will tell her I am going to the auction "only" to see what it will go for and mention that I won't bid on it unless it is going real low. THEN, the most dangerous part of the whole plan, if everything goes as planned and I am able to get it, I tell her Thursday night that we have a new member in the family. .
Boy! I love old trucks and all of the danger and intrigue that goes with them!
BTW, she keeps telling me I "have enough trucks", who ever heard of this? Women!!
I too use PENN Dick's bribery method. I can buy anything I want as long as all applicable wife fines, duties and taxes are paid. When I bought my 53 I told my wife I had wanted one al my life. Her response was,
"That's a coincidence because I have wanted a full carat diamond my whole life"
I'd buy the wrecker. What's she gonna do. Divorce you and give all your stuff to her new husband?
Be especially nice to her for a few days, do what she wants you to do and make sure you have a warm sleeping bag and pillow in
the back of your panel truck if this plan backfires after you bring the truck home!
Excellant approach. I've used it (successfully) myself.
Make her think you're not worked up about it, you're being cautious, you'll only buy it if it's REALLY a good deal....blah, blah, blah.
I loved many of the other suggestions though. (However, approx. 50% of the reason I'm presently on my 2nd marriage is because of street rods - no guff).
Hey Bob, just a thought here. Remembering my little road trip out your way to pick up parts from ya, couldn't you buy the truck and stash it at your buddies like you did that beat up F-3 that I got the doors off of, and just tell your wife that your buddy bought it? then a few weeks later, tell her your traded him one of your other parts trucks for it? I know its a longshot, but could be worth a try then again, that might just get your into a load of trouble. Also, you could always try to get your boys to help work on convincing Mom, that it could be more quality "bonding" time
Thanks guys for all the suggestions and encouragement. I knew I could come here for the support I need.
Dick,
She has been nagging me to put new windows in the entrance way. She thinks I can do it myself, I don't, and I have been fighting her on it. I was given a name of a place that is suppose to do a good job at a good price. Appeasing her by laying a kitchen floor myself seemed to work when I bought my last parts truck
Jon,
The guy that is letting me store my trucks in his yard is the same junk lover I mentioned in my last post. He's a great guy and will help me any way he can. He is encouraging my sickness for old iron.
It's a good thing I am self employed, if all else fails, I can sleep at my shop. It's heated, has a couch, toilet with running water and color TV and I wouldn't have far to go to get to work either.
Bob you don't forget to tell her all the money you'll save cause you can drop towing from your insurance. Oh never mind you don't own any chevy's. Watch out when bribing my wife is drivimg hers it cost 100 times what my truck did.
