Wheel Spacers and Towing?

So I like the factory 20' wheels, plan on going up to 35's on my next tire change and will be installing a leveling kit. The only thing I dont like about the factory wheels is how tucked into the fenders they are so I am considering running 2" spacers. My only concern is will this impact my ability to tow heavy? I dont want to compromise that as I have a large 5th wheel I pull on a regular basis.

Thanks for your thoughts and opinions!

just a educated opinion, it will load the front bearings differently. Will it matter? Most likely not. The rear is one beefy set up and I doubt you will phase them. Carry a heavy plow with no rim pilot holes and you are asking for issues if you are relying on the studs to carry all the weight. Same with the rear, be sure your spacers run on the hub and rim pilots and not the studs. That is the only time I have seen a failure from no pilot or sloppy pilot hole to hub fit. Cj

I’ve ran quality spacers (BORA) for years. Check them every rotation at 5k miles and no issue. Tow everything from a 6x12 to a 9k center console to goosenecks loaded down. Only down side I see is additional wear on bears as stated above. I have close to 45k on this truck with them installed.

Thanks for the reply Curtis. Its always nice to hear a real life review vs a lot of the youtube reviews that dont really apply to my application. Are you running 2" front and rear?

Any chance you could post some side profile pictures of your truck depicting the tire offset? I have same wheels and might be interested in doing this too.

Thanks

Use a quality set of STEEL spacers that are hub-centric. No aluminum. You'll never have a problem

Whistlindiesel uses Far From Stock wheel spacers... but I wouldn’t use that as an end all be all, because most of what he is doing is small sample sizes of extreme abuse. Not towing a big load thousands of miles... the other thing to think about is, wheel spacers are not that much different than a lug centric wheel with a negative offset... get hub centric and when you change your oil... check you lugs and you’ll be fine.

2" Front and Rear. The initial BORA run of spacers did not accommodate the M275 hub size therefore hubcentric was not available. (hubcentric front and standard rear) I was working with Shift Industries to see if they could do a hubcentric that would fit. To overcome this, I use 4 acorn nuts to center the wheel and tighten the 4 factory lugs then replace the acorns with the factory.

Make DOUBLE sure you cut the stocks studs enough so they do NOT make contact with the backside of the wheels. It’ll make to lug nuts holding wheels to spacers come loose when studs eats into the backside of Wheels.

2” spacers will require roughly 1/4” of studs to be cut off best I remember.

as mentioned - you can ONLY use hub centric spacers with stock wheels.

Why not leave the 4 acorn nuts for strength centering the wheels to the non hub centric rear spacers on M275 rear axle ?

I machined my Hubs on M275 rear axle to accept the hub centric spacers & they worked great with stock wheels.

ive since went with 12” wide aftermarket wheels & removed these spacers.

im wanting to run the stock tires & wheels W/O Spacers to Alaska & will have to do the 4 acorn nuts to center stock wheels on hubs I’ve machined down just like you speak of.

i put ~80k miles on my 2017 and have ~12k miles now on my 2020. both trucks got 2.5/3.5 carli kits with 37" on oem 20s. both got 1" bora hubcentric spacers. neither truck pulled every day, but do get a 12k pound boat every weekend. neither truck has had issues regarding wheel spacers.
