I rebuilt my engine two years ago and would like to get an oil analysis done. Can anyone who is familiar with this, recommend a vendor? I would think the sample should be taken after the engine has run to thoroughly mix the oil? That should ensure the "goodies" aren't stratified in the oil.
What should I be looking for besides glucose and cholesterol?
What is the recommended mileage on the oil when sampling is typically done?
The two biggies are Blackstone and Oil Analyzers. Both cost about the same and results are similar.
Difference is in turn-around time. If you have 2+ weeks (not kidding, weeks plural) to wait for the report, Blackstone is fine. If you want a report in ~3 business days, Oil Analyzers is the way to go. Did I mention that they cost about the same?
Sampling interval is what you want. With two years on the motor, probably due just-cause. Aside from that, I have sampled as short as 1,500 miles (motor was in break-in cycle) out to 10K (motor was well broken-in).
In terms of what to look for, IIRC, Blackstone charges extra for TBN where Oil Analyzers includes this as part of the base fee. If there are concerns or focus areas with the results, both labs will detail them in the notes. I have found that Blackstone's narrative is a bit flowery and Oil Analyzers more direct and technical. Both will comment whether the oil is good for continued use.
Since I'm retired; I have lots of time and have been reading up on the topic. I have decided to wait until I change oil to take the sample. That should shed some light on the 5000 mile interval?
