I'm in the middle of painting my truck and will post about it soon. Cab is done. I'm up against a weather related time crunch because of September temperatures here in western Massachusetts. Now doing the rest in pieces. Safe storage of the finished pieces is a problem so I'm considering taking the time to immediately install the doors (would adjust them later). Looking for advice on installing the door rubbers. Is there a real advantage to hold off hanging the doors so the rubbers can be glued on while the doors are off the truck?

48-52 or 53-56? I suggest putting weatherstripping on with the doors off at least for the 53-46 . Some guys here have put them on with the doors on the truck.
weatherstripping is a hard job with the doors on the truck. Especially the hinge end. I used a combo of weatherstrip adhesive where it was easy and 3m double stick tape in the bad places...not enough hand room ! still not happy with the outcome
Applying weatherstrip is a PITA when the door is removed and laying flat on a workbench...would not even consider attempting the job with the door installed.
Glad I asked. Thanks all. I'll find a place to store them. Not looking forward to handling painted parts. Painted them today. Front fenders are next.
New door seals came with the truck when I bought it. They are not the hollow type though. Will order some.

I'm getting ready to glue on my door weatherstrip, too. Can someone help me figure out how these strips are supposed to go on? A photo of the finished installation would be really helpful. Midfifty's site said you need 'em, but what do they do?
These retainers provide a stronger bond for the weatherstrip along the lower edge of the door where the rubber strip is more susceptible to damage. The retainer is mounted exactly as shown in your diagram. I pop rivet mine in place and once the rubber weatherstrip is glued in place, the waffle edge is bent over the rubber to hold it in place. Sorry, this is a part of the truck I normally don't photograph.
Your doors should already have those strips unless rust was repaired with patches, etc. Towards the end of my build thread are some pics if you need to install them . I'll see if I can get a pic or 2.
These were taken last year. I'll try to remember. That rusty piece is off the old part of the door. You can get the instructions from Mid Fifty (PDF) which tells the measurements. Seem like I marked it with the red marks. I also put the orange handled ***** punch and blue pencil i think... You should be able to see better and read what I did I can't really remember. Check out the below basket case build.
Hope this helps.
At the factory, these strips were spotwelded to the door without the benefit of primer or paint in the joint...bad place for rust to take hold. Personally, every door I reworked got these strips removed and replaced...inexpensive insurance for the future. Here is what my doors looked like before installing the painted strips...
