R12 v R22

Hello all. First off, I do not like the new search feature unless my phone is the one messing up. I searched in the hvac section and hear and can not find what I'm looking for.

Can the R22 be used in place of R12 or mixed with R12? I have a customer that has about 20lbs left from a 30lb tank and said he would charge the truck when I get the ac system installed. The truck did not come with air but I'm buying the parts from the jy for the dealer installed air. Would/should there be any complications doing this? Any links that I missed would be helpful.

Thanks for your time and input.

Well since the search is not working to well, here is what a quick search on my part found. Sorry I do not have time to read thru it all and give you a definitive answer. But I found statements like...."They are two completely different refrigerants, won't mix at all. But when it blows your system have the decency to tell the service tech what ya did. They are two completely different refrigerants, won't mix at all."Now that is talk about a HOME HVAC system, but a statement to consider nonetheless.

"R134a systems operate at higher discharge-side pressures than R12, which can cause compressor seals to leak. Bottom line, R134a simply doesn't cool as well as R12. ... The advantage of ester oil is that it works with both R12 as well as R134a, so you can fill the system with it and then use either refrigerant."

"
DO NOT MIX R12 and R134 !!!!! Sorry to shout, but this is important. There are chemical incompatibilities between the Freon-like compounds and the compressor lubricating oils. This has reputedly resulted in a condition of automotive air conditioning systems called Black Death. Where the heat combines with chemical reaction products to sort of 'powder coat' the interior of all components of the system. Bad Juju."

My understanding is r22 is for home hvac use (I have a bunch here for my house). I do not believe it would work in your AC system as none of your parts, including the compressor were designed for it. I know it operates at higher pressures than r12, which means it might work for awhile, but will eventually seize up your compressor.

Just buy some r12 on ebay if you aren't wanting newer refrigerant.

As Rich said positively DO NOT use R22. R22 is quite valuable right now so that 20lb is worth some jingle.

R-22 and R-12 are not interchangeable . R-12 is designed for mid-temp refrigeration and R-22 is designed for comfort cooling.
