Hard start

1999 e350 van 7.3 runs perfect but if i shut it off it doesnt want to start back up. This started out of nowhere. No other signs if issues, no cel. I have to crank the hell out of it to get it to start. And its warm out over here. Im not sure where to begin.

Where to begin - let's collect some data.

What is the fuel level? Have you performed the in tank pickup modifications?
How is the fuel pressure?

Is the oil level full? Is the HPOP reservoir full (within 0.7" of the top)? Want to see if the LPOP is keeping up, or if there are leaks.

Is the IPR nut that holds the solenoid on tight?

Does it start better if you unplug the ICP sensor? Is there oil in the sensor connection?

Can you log ICP, IPR%, FUELPW and RPM in Forscan Lite or similar scanner during that hard start?

half a tank of fuel and hutch mod has been performed.

Havent measured fuel pressure. Pump definitely buzzes right away.

This is a van so the hpop is a pain to get to. So i havent checked the oil level. This is what would make the most sense to me tho.

Whats an ipr nut?

i did a new icp a few months ago but it wasnt oem. Im going to pick up an oem motorcraft icp and replace it regardless. I know the off brand ones can cause funky issues like this.

I dont have a scanner that can do that. I have a friend with that equipment but this problem seems to come and go. I need it to happen while its on the scanner lol

i appreciate the help. Im nervous to have to do an hpop on this thing.

Very good to hear this - that's a big variable that is off the table now as a possible cause.

I don't know the challenges of working on the 7.3 in a van, but there are a few folks here who have.

Not wanting to start hot can point to the IPR solenoid - they sometimes fail that way. You can cool it with freeze spray (canned air held upside down), or some icewater, and see if it starts.

Unplugging your aftermarket ICP sensor will force the PCM to use internal lookup table values for ICP - it's a quick way to rule out the ICP sensor.

The HPOP is one of the last parts we tend to suspect - as it rarely fails. ICP sensor, IPR, Injector o-rings leaking, HPOP resevoir full and oil level full, and fuel pressure above 45psi are things to check first.

The IPR sensor is circled in this pic, along with other sensors - the tinnerman nut on the end of the IPR can loosen and fall off, allowing the solenoid to move, and change how the IPR operates.

Yeah, I hear you on needing to catch this intermittent issue on the scanner when it happens. It's really easy and inexpensive to do that now.

See OBDII tools in my signature. You can buy a cheap OBDII bluetooth dongle, and a $5 Forscan Lite app for your phone, and start logging each trip you take in your van. I do that as a matter of routine now, while I learn about my truck.

If you use an iPhone, get the wifi dongle, if android, get the bluetooth dongle. I'm using a BAFX bluetooth dongle - only $20. Forscan is free for the PC version, but I find the phone app is more convenient, and worth the $5 cost.

Im chalking this problem up to the junk aftermarket icp sensor. The truck is doing everything it did when i first needed to replace it. The standard brand part failed as expected. Im ordering a ford replacement and ill report back. thank you guys
