Knock in steering wheel

When going over bumps at low speeds I feel a knock or small hit in the steering wheel. I can not figure out what this is and it’s getting worse. Since first noticing it, both left and right upper and lower ball joints have been replaced, the entire rack and pinion system was replaced and I also put in new inner and outer tie rods, the lower steering shaft (the one that connects to rack and pinion and compresses) is new, both sway bar links are new, both upper control arms have also been replaced. The drivers side hub assembly was also replaced. All these parts are new and are Moog

i figured after replacing All of this, the problem would’ve been fixed. It’s not. The upper steering shaft, the one that goes through the firewall has no play and is tight. I checked both front wheels for play and there isn’t any. What do I check? What could this be?

The issue is going to be in the rack itself. These racks are prone to play.

The knock was in the old rack and it steadily got worse, even after the new rack was installed. I will have the rack checked out again, but what are the chance the new rack took up this same knock and the same intensity as the old rack when it was replaced?

If the new rack was a generic reman it is a good safe bet there was no hard parts replaced and it will have the same issue.

The new rack was purchased from Advance Auto Parts and was one of the better rebuilds they sold. It was labeled as “best” on their site. The company was Cardone and it has a limited lifetime warranty. It cost $295 plus core deposit. The description says it’s a “complete” rebuilt rack and pinion.

How would I go about checking to see if the rack is bad and not something else? Where and would I try to find play to see if it’s the rack and not something else?

I’d be kinda pissed if I had to take it out and gave someone install it again and do another alignment.

But it is what it is. I’m finally back at work full time after this COVID mess and can’t afford to have truck break down on me. I’m off Friday and would need to narrow this down and order parts so it can be fixed Friday. Your help is much appreciated

Well you just answered your own question, you bought Cardone. Some of the worst parts in the industry. Feel free to do a search on Cardone. I would have suggested Motorcraft or Detroit Axle for the reman.

I was able to take a good look at this today and focused on play coming from the Cardone rack. The play looks like it is coming from the lower steering shaft, where it telescopes out. It’s a new Dorman lower steering shaft that has a lifetime warranty. New one will be in tomorrow and I’m replacing it. Hope this was it. Thanks for your help
