Hi guys,
I have a new sound, a clunk with a shudder that can be felt/seen. This is before the truck is put into gear. I remembered what has been said about the slip-yoke thing. But this happens when I first start the truck.
Also thanks to you, I went out and put my transfercase through the "motions", I don't use it till winter time, so it sits "idle" all summer. I didn't want trouble this winter with trying to get to work at midnight with a foot of snow on the road. Could this be the cause of the clunk? Yes I did remember to turn the dial back to 2wd, and no my hubs are not in the "lock" position.
Man, New Hampshire stinks at road cleaning! When I lived in New York the guys would be salting before the flakes started hitting the ground.
I noticed the same clunk. Started the truck, and while I was waiting for my passenger, I could feel and hear it. Yes, it does sound like it is coming from under the jockey box, or right over the top of the tranny. BTW, the tranny was still in park.
I have also noticed the same clunk (I think its the same anyway) when I first put it in drive or reverse and start to move.
Dealer is aware of the noise, but is unaware of any service bullitin on it.
I thought I remember reading something about a valve or something closing shut soon after the truck is started. I think it only supposed to happen when the A/C is on. I'll do some searches and try to find the posts.
Yeah it's a door in the heating/ac system closing when it gets some vacuum built up after starting. Try starting with the hvac controls in different positions and see what happens.
I have what seems like the same problem. After starting the truck there is a loud clunk. It sounds like someone lying underneath the truck just kicked the floor with a steel toe boot! I actually jumped the first couple times I heard it.
I am grateful for RRMike's post and will investigate. It doesn't happen every time, so it could very well be related to ventilation system.
There is a TSB on this problem, It' the A/C accumulator, Ford replaced mine. I had to tell them what the problem was and where the information was . Found it in my PSR magazine. Many people have this problem, I have it on my 2003 King Ranch, but not all the time. My 2000 7.3 was the one they relaced the accumulator on.
