Valve Body Sticking

Expedition, 5.4L
The transmission shift from 1st to 2nd is hitting late and very, very hard.
I try to deal with it by letting up on fuel just a moment before she shifts, but it's an easy moment to miss.

My repair was going to be replacement of the trans fluid, maybe adding Lucas Oil to it, cleaning the filter and hope the sticking would stop.
I think that's all I can do before I have to have the valve body rebuilt.

Anything I'm missing? Someone else must have dealt with this issue before.....

Which valve is sticking? How hard is it to move the valve? You have removed the valve body to know that the valve is sticking, right? And how are you going to clean the filter? Cut it open, clean it out, and glue it back together? And why are you going to clean the filter? If the filter needs cleaning it's because the trans is totally destroyed. That's the only way there could be enough debris to clog the filter.

If you haven't removed the valve body, get the codes read. Actually, that would be a good idea in either case. The places that read codes free CANNOT read these codes. You need Forscan, or a good independent shop, or a Ford dealer.

Hi Mark, sorry my description wasn't detailed enough for you...but its because I know very little about this problem, hence, I came to FTE and I deeply appreciate any feedback you have on this issue.

I consulted an owner of a shop I trust about the problem and he suggested that replacing the AT fluid completely, cleaning the filter and adding Lucas would give me at least a shot at solving the problem.
To be clear, this late shift issue has been going on for months, since 2018. I got hurt in 2018 and couldn't work on my Expedition except for minor issues, stil disabled, still that situation and not working, no money to pay anyone for a repair. If push comes to shove, I can get the unit into a reliable shop, but I want to have as best a handle on what's going on so I have a little bit of control with the repair.

The "sticking valve" is the only term I know. I wasn't sure if the hard shift, late in the rampup of the RPM cycle was electrical with a sensor improperly sending wrong information to the computer.
I thought that because I had to replace the GEM already and may-be it had some impact on the functioning of the AT.

What I'm trying to understand is if the problem truly is a replacement of the AT as you said in your reply. I hear you about the filter only getting clogged if something in the AT failed and metal shavings or whatever are clogging the filter. What goes against that thinking is that the problem has gone on for-ever! I'd think debris or shavings in the filter would have indicated a bigger failure by now and not gone on for months.

I hope that helps clarify my confusion. I'm unable at this point to crawl under the vehicle to get serial numbers, but if that information is necessary to assist you in your thinking, I have a friend who would do that for me.

Thanks,

chad

OH, and I'll see if a shop has the FORESCAN. The vehicle isn't throwing any "everyday" codes.....
I'll hunt that information down.

Most shops don't have Forscan. But they have other, more expensive tools that will read the codes you need. You can download Forscan free at www.forscan.org. There are versions for smartphones and for laptops. You'll need an ELM327 adapter to connect to the OBDII port. I bought mine from Amazon for less than $30.

Mark, thanks a bunch. I'll get this code read and report.
I've been thrashing in the dark on this issue so far!
