The inner splines of the convertor spin both directions when I spun them by hand and with the input shaft. The interweb says they should only spin one way. I bought the truck with a clicking sound coming from the front of the trans and one day I lost all gears when I put it in reverse (no noise no warning no forwards either). Trans has 30k on a rebuild (so I was told) and fluid and inside of the pan where clean. Guessing the convertor died. Truck is 02 F350 with 7.3 and a tuner. Any ideas or thoughts would be off great help. Thanks Ray.
Crossing my fingers on your tranny. Unfortunately when my converter bit the dust it took my tranny with it. Honestly I’m not sure how good the rebuilder was if they only put in a single clutch TC. I’m not sure I would’ve trusted their work. Precision made a solid TC for a very good price when I had mine redone (not by choice) couple years back. Same thing, previous owner had rebuilt and did crappy job. Probably saved a couple hundred bucks.. 🙄
Billet triple disc is what was recommend to me. I will let more experienced chime in on brand
This is good advice.
Personally, I would get the most built transmission I could afford even if I'm staying at stock power levels. The peace of mind that comes from that is immeasureable.
I don't know what a good flexplate is, but by all means, be sure and get one.
The stock ones crack all the time.
Real thick and rigid aftermarket (billet) flex plates don't flex, and as such cause abnormal thrust bearing wear on the crankshaft.
Really good flex plates are made from super steel alloyed with Kryptonite that is harvested only during the equinox of a twin sun galaxy several million lightyears away (so expect longer shipping times), but this special material is ductile enough to flex, and strong enough to handle the torque and heat without fatiguing and fracturing.
Definitely get a really good flexplate. And when you find one, post back and let us know which one it is.
It's been my personal experience to go with a low stall converter also. I had a triple disc billet and flywheel blah blah blah. I ended up breaking the stator in it at a moderate 600whp. It was a low stall, the rebuilder talked me into going with a factory stall. I hated it from day one to the time I sold the truck.
