Got a 1990 F250 4x4. The transmission is slipping pretty bad. I have been told that this is more a torque converter problem than a trans problem. What I have been told is the torque converter is to weak for the truck. Now I am not a transmission man and basically I have no clue. Any truth to this? Any other ideas?
Need more info. What trans is it, C6 or E4OD? Slipping in all gears including reverese?
Is the fluid level up to the mark? Does fluid look clean with no burnt smell?
It does have a button to turn off the O\D so I am fairly sure it is not a C6. It does slip in all gears including reverse. Fluid level is good and no funky smells. I may be wrong but I think it is a 5.8L.
have you changed the filter? That would be the first step and cleaning out the pan if it's never been done would be good. Use your best judgement on replacing the fluid after seeing how much debris is in the pan.
Remove all the bolts from around the transmission pan except for two at the front and two at the back. Place a container under the pan and unscrew the two back bolts about 1/4 in and loosen the two front ones. Pull the rear of the pan down and let the fluid drain. Now drop the pan and empty the rest of the fluid. Look for any debris in the pan.
Pull the filter off, make sure the rubber sealing ring comes with it. If it doesn`t pull it off now.
Get a new filter (for a 4x4) and push it up into place, make sure it snaps into place. Clean the pan and replace, do not overtighten the pan bolts.
If you want to change all the fluid then remove the bung at the bottom of the bellhousing and rotate the engine untill the converter drain is in view. Remove the drain bung and let the converter drain, replace the bung.
Refill the trans with fresh fluid (through the dipstick tube).
