1951 Ford F1 - bought rebuilt steering box. Will install myself (I hope). Question concerns the steering wheel shaft. How do I disconnect the steering wheel shaft from the existing (old) box (can I do it while it’s still in the truck)? Conversely, how do I attach the rebuilt box to the steering shaft? Anything related I should know? I have a pretty good idea on the setting the alignment. TIA Steering wheel shaft attaches on the left (in this photo). How?
Steering shaft exits the on the R/H side of that pic , and should be on your rebuilt steering box when you receive it .
You will probably just need to swap the outer column tube from your old steering box to your new one .
Ah, what you’re saying is that when I get the rebuilt steering box, it will come with a steering shaft already installed(versus the cutoff shaft in the picture). Apparently, I don’t reuse the steering shaft currently in my truck. Now that I look at the set up, that make sense. Which means I have to pull the steering wheel and other fun stuff to remove the existing steering box and shaft.
Like Scott said, the steering shaft is one piece all the way into the box. It should look like this:

First, thanks for the above info.
Right after this post, someone bought the steering gear box, so I had to wait until they return the core and it was rebuilt. I now have the remanufactured box and shaft, and understand the removal and replacement procedures except for one item. The original Ford manual says I have to disconnect the shaft outer column tube from the dash, and remove the floor covering plate around the shaft tube and remove it all. Question, Can I leave the shaft cover and floor plate in place and just loosen the bolt on the shaft cover in the engine compartment and slide the shaft and gear box out?
TIA

it’s a bit of fiddling without removing the floor plate, but it works. You’ll need to remove the upper mount on the dash. I recommend a second person to help you. One in the cab, one under car/hood.
