'74 4x4 Pickup

In the midst of converting to true power steering. The original steering box is unbolted from the frame and now . . .. How is that old box removed?? Do I have to do it from the steering wheel shaft? And if so, how is that done? It's not obvious to me just looking at what's there.

(And yes, my mechanic skill and experience could increase 100% and it might nudge me into the mediocre range. But I'm patient.)

Thanks for any help. Vic

If I understand you right, disconnect the steering shaft at the input shaft of the steering box. Do you have what looks like part# 3A535 ?

Nope, not the box. Mine's tucked into the inside of the frame and is boxier.
I'd loosened the clamp at the box before I posted my question: just don't know how to divorce the box from the steering shaft at that point.

Get that bolt out of there and pry the clamp apart just a bit. PB blaster the heck outa it.

Then using 2 big #4 flat tips screwdrivers one on top, one on bottom. Pry the bell shaped collar off the splined out put shaft of the gear box.

If not already done, the pitman arm will need to come off so the box can be removed from the frame....another bigger "pinch bolt".

The bolt goes through a groove on the input shaft of box. Bolt has to be removed, not just loosened.

Thanks everyone. Bolt is coming out. I'm not sure how long the PO drove this truck with the steering in that condition but it's such a dirty, gunky, glue-paste God-awful moldy mess he must have spent a small fortune replacing the PS fluid every other day.
