56 box has a shorter shaft up to the steering wheel. If you use the 53-55 steering wheel you get a little more belly room.

My box came from a 250 and it's in a 100. Dennis

Pintoplumber has it right. The steering column shaft is integral to the box, 56 used the deep dish steering wheel so the shaft and column is shorter. To save you asking, no the 53-55 shaft cannot be easily shortened. You can use a 53-55 complete column and box in a 56 by using the 53-55 steering wheel. If your box is worn out (most are) you can get the rebuild parts or a rebuilt one from Mid Fifty, or replace your box with a Toyota and get power steering (using the Toy PS box) or a much more modern design manual steering box (using the Toy manual box).

Thanks, just what I needed to know. I only asked because all my searching didn't come up with a parts interchange and I am thinking of parting out a 56 F250 so I needed to know what it was a direct fit for. It seems I.m finding out a lot is different on the 56 from the 53-55.
Probably don't matter to the model A and hotrod guys what year it's from but to a restorer it will.
